Gaurikund sits at 1,982 metres in the Mandakini valley of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. The site has two distinct sacred dimensions: as the base-camp for the 16-kilometre Kedarnath trek, and as a tirtha in its own right associated with Goddess Gauri (Parvati). Tradition holds that Parvati, daughter of the Himalaya, came to this exact spot to perform tapas for the boon of Shiva as her husband — bathing daily in the hot springs that flowed naturally here.
The hot spring (kund) is the focal sacred feature of Gaurikund itself. Water emerges from underground at approximately 35-40°C. The original large stone tank was largely destroyed in the 2013 floods; a smaller, restored kund now receives the spring for bathing pilgrims. Pilgrims starting the Kedarnath trek bathe here on the morning of their departure; the warmth eases stiff muscles before the long uphill walk. The Gauri Mata Mandir, a small Devi shrine on a low rise above the kund, is visited before pilgrims begin the trek — a bow to the goddess of the place before climbing to her consort Kedarnath.
The trek to Kedarnath
The 16-kilometre trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is one of the great pilgrim walks of India. Pilgrims start at dawn, walk through pine and rhododendron forests for the first half, then cross the high meadows of Lincholi and Rambada (the latter washed away in the 2013 Kedarnath floods and partially rebuilt), and finally reach Kedarnath at 3,583m. The trek takes 7-8 hours one-way at a comfortable pace. Helicopters operate from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi for pilgrims who cannot trek; Gaurikund itself is also the helicopter pickup-back point for the return.

Gaurikund is a sacred kund in the Devi-bhakti tradition — the place of Parvati's tapas before her wedding to Shiva. The hot spring is held to share the warmth of her devotional fire. The Gauri Mata Mandir is a small but ancient shrine; Devi-bhaktas often visit Gaurikund as a separate Devi-darshan, independent of the Kedarnath trek.
For the Kedarnath pilgrim, the symbolism is layered: one bathes at the kund of Shiva's consort before climbing to Shiva's own seat. The bhav is that of Parvati blessing the pilgrim on the long uphill journey to her husband. Tradition holds that those who fail to bathe at Gaurikund before the trek receive a less complete darshan at Kedarnath; many pilgrims keep this tradition.
చరిత్ర
Gaurikund as a pilgrim base has been used for centuries. Modern infrastructure dates from the twentieth century, with significant rebuilding after the 2013 Kedarnath floods that devastated the entire Mandakini valley. The road from Sonprayag to Gaurikund (the last 5 km of the highway) was rebuilt 2014-2016. Today Gaurikund has basic-to-moderate hotels, traditional dharma-shalas, and stables for ponies and porters who carry pilgrims to Kedarnath.
వాస్తుశిల్పం
Gaurikund is a small mountain town centred on the kund. The present stone-paved kund is the smaller structure restored after the 2013 floods destroyed the original tank, with steps for bathing. The Gauri Mata Mandir is a simple stone shrine with a Nagara shikhara. The trek-start point — where pilgrims register and where ponies/palkis are arranged — is at the upper end of the village. Mandakini flows beside the village, joined by smaller streams.
ఆచారాలు & పూజలు
The Gauri Mata Mandir conducts morning and evening aartis. The kund is open for bathing throughout the daylight hours; the busiest time is pre-dawn (4-5 AM) when trek-pilgrims bathe before their early start. Pilgrims offer red chunari to Gauri Mata, bilva-patra to Kedarnath's symbolic linga at the Mandir, and small flower-bowls floated into the Mandakini.
The traditional sequence is: arrive at Gaurikund from Sonprayag the previous evening, overnight stay, pre-dawn bath at the kund, Gauri Mata darshan, registration for the trek, and trek-start by 5 AM. Many pilgrims also stop at Gaurikund on the return from Kedarnath — the warm bath after the long descent is the supreme reward of the yatra.
