Why Pind Daan in Kashi
The shastras hold that shraddha performed in Kashi carries a weight granted to few places on earth. Here, where Manikarnika's flame has not gone out in living memory, the offering of pinda — rice, til, and water given with sankalpa — reaches the departed directly. Families come to Kashi for first-year shraddha, for Pitru Paksha, and for ancestors whose rites were left incomplete.
The vidhi follows a fixed sequence: sankalpa (the declaration of intent, naming your gotra and the departed), pinda daan (the offering itself), tarpan (water offered with til), and brahmin bhojan or dakshina. A complete ceremony takes two to three hours, performed at dawn or morning on the ghat.
Our pandits are Kashi-born, perform the full vidhi without shortcuts, and explain each step in Hindi or your language as you go. You are never rushed, and never surprised by a demand mid-ceremony — everything is agreed in writing beforehand.

Ganga snan if you wish, darshan at Kashi Vishwanath, and drop-back. Many families add a boat ride to offer flowers midstream.

Which ghat is best for Pind Daan in Varanasi?
Manikarnika, Dashashwamedh, and Assi Ghat are all sanctioned by tradition. Manikarnika carries the deepest association with moksha; Assi is calmer and easier for elderly family members. Your pandit will recommend based on the occasion and the day's crowds.
When should Pind Daan be performed?
Pitru Paksha (the fortnight before Sharad Navratri) is the most significant period, but shraddha in Kashi is performed year-round — on death anniversaries (barsi), Amavasya days, or whenever the family is able to come. There is no wrong day to remember one's ancestors.
What is the cost of Pind Daan in Varanasi?
The cost depends on the vidhi's extent (ekodishta for one departed soul, or sarva-pitru for all ancestors), samagri, and dakshina. We give one fixed written price before you confirm — it covers pandit, samagri, and assistance, with nothing asked on the day.
Can Pind Daan be done without visiting Varanasi?
Tradition strongly prefers the karta (usually the eldest son or a close relative) to be present and perform the rites with their own hands. If travel is truly impossible, contact us and we will advise honestly on what tradition permits.
What should we bring and wear?
Bring nothing but yourselves — we arrange all samagri. Men traditionally wear dhoti-kurta (we can arrange one); women wear saree or salwar. White or light colours are customary for shraddha.
