What the Satyanarayan Katha Involves
The Satyanarayan Katha is the most widely loved household puja in Hindu tradition — the worship of Bhagwan Satyanarayan, Vishnu as truth itself, followed by the reading of the katha from the Skanda Purana in its five adhyayas. Each chapter tells of those who vowed the puja, forgot or kept their word, and what followed — the merchant, the woodcutter, the king — and the family listens together to the end, for the katha is only complete when heard in full.
Families arrange it in Kashi for the occasions it has always marked: a purnima (full moon) day, a new home, a marriage or anniversary, the start of a venture, or simple gratitude for a wish fulfilled. The vidhi begins with Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana, moves through the puja of Satyanarayan with panchamrit, and closes with aarti and prasad — the customary panjiri of roasted wheat flour, or sheera with banana and tulsi. The whole ceremony takes about two to three hours.
We arrange the pandit, the full samagri, and the prasad, at your hotel room, a private venue near the ghats, or a family home. The pandit reads the katha unabridged and explains it as he goes, in Hindi or your language, so that children hear the stories the way their grandparents did.

Prasad is distributed to everyone present. Most families follow with Kashi Vishwanath darshan or an evening at the Ganga Aarti — we arrange both in the same visit.

Common questions
What is the best day for a Satyanarayan Katha?
Purnima — the full moon — is the day most associated with the katha, and Kartik, Vaishakh, and Shravan purnimas are held especially dear. But the katha is performed year-round: on anniversaries, before a new venture, or on any day the family gathers with a clean heart. Your pandit can suggest a muhurat suited to the occasion.
Can the katha be held in a hotel room?
Yes — a clean, quiet room is entirely sufficient, and this is how most visiting families do it. The pandit brings the chowki, kalash, and all puja items and needs only a corner kept clean. If you prefer, we also arrange a private venue near the ghats.
How long does it take, and can everyone participate?
About two to three hours from Ganesh puja to prasad. A couple — or one family member — sits as yajman and performs the puja with the pandit's guidance, while everyone else, children included, sits and listens to the katha. Hearing it through is itself considered participation in the vrat.
What is included?
The pandit, the complete samagri — kalash, chowki cloth, flowers, fruit, panchamrit, havan items where the venue permits — and the prasad, customarily panjiri or sheera prepared fresh. You bring nothing but yourselves; come in traditional dress if you can.
What does it cost?
A Satyanarayan Katha is a modest ceremony, and its cost depends mainly on the venue and any additions such as havan. We send one fixed written quote on WhatsApp before you confirm — it covers pandit, samagri, prasad, and dakshina, with nothing asked on the day.
Can it be part of a Kashi Yatra?
Yes, and it fits naturally — many families hold the katha on the morning after darshan, as a thanksgiving for the yatra itself. Tell us you want it included and we will place it in the itinerary at the right hour.
