Getting there

How Kolkata Pilgrims Reach the Char Dham

The yatra does not begin at a dham. It begins at Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun — the last flat ground before the Garhwal Himalaya — and from Kolkata, getting there is a journey of its own.

By air. The Airports Authority of India's published Dehradun Airport schedule for August 2026 lists a direct Kolkata–Dehradun sector three days a week — Wednesday, Friday and Sunday — landing at Jolly Grant Airport around midday and turning straight back for Kolkata just before one o'clock. That schedule entry is valid until 23 October 2026, which covers nearly the whole yatra season. A midday landing is a gift: you are down at Rishikesh or Haridwar by afternoon and rested before the first mountain morning. Airlines revise schedules every season, so we reconfirm your exact flight against the live booking before anything is locked.

By train. Rail is still how most families in Bengal travel to the Himalaya, and there is nothing wrong with that — but be honest about the distance. Kolkata to the Uttarakhand foothills is a cross-country haul across the full width of north India, not an overnight hop. Train numbers, running days and timings change from season to season, so we will not print one on a web page and let you plan around it. Tell us your dates and we check the current railway timetable, then tell you in writing exactly which service, which class, and how long you will be aboard.

What happens either way. Our driver is waiting at the airport gate or the station exit — you are not negotiating with anyone on arrival. From there it is a short road transfer to your first night's rest at Haridwar or Rishikesh, and the circuit begins the next morning, unhurried.

The circuit

The Four Dhams, in the Order the Tradition Keeps

Uttarakhand Tourism describes Yamunotri as the commencing point of the Char Dham Yatra, which proceeds from Yamunotri to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath. That west-to-east order is not a travel agent's convenience — it is the sequence pilgrims have kept for centuries, and every Satmarg itinerary follows it.

DhamPresiding deityAltitudeHow you reach the temple
1. YamunotriMa Yamuna~3,233 mRoad to Janki Chatti, then a steep climb of about 3 km that takes roughly three hours on foot. Ponies and palanquins available.
2. GangotriMa Ganga~3,415 mThe road reaches the temple. Uttarakhand Tourism calls it a twelve-hour drive from Rishikesh — the day is long even though the walk is short.
3. KedarnathShiva, as Jyotirlinga3,580 mA 16 km trek from Gaurikund, or the helicopter shuttle. Sonprayag sits about 20 km down the route.
4. BadrinathVishnu, as Badrinarayan~3,100 mThe road reaches the temple. Open roughly six months of the year.

At Gangotri the water you bathe in is still called the Bhagirathi; it takes the name Ganga only further down, where the Alaknanda joins it at Devprayag. The river's true source, Gaumukh in the Gangotri glacier, lies 19 km beyond the temple. And at Badrinath, on the banks of the Alaknanda between the Nar and Narayana ranges, the shrine is remembered as having been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century.

Route legs, package shapes and the helicopter question are all set out on our Char Dham Yatra hub.

Time and pace

How Many Days a Kolkata Family Should Budget

This is the question that quietly decides everything else. From Delhi the Char Dham is a long holiday. From Kolkata it is a fortnight, and it is kinder to say so now than to discover it halfway up a mountain road.

StageWhat to set aside
Kolkata → Dehradun or HaridwarOne day by air — a midday landing still leaves the afternoon for the road down. Longer by train.
The first night in the foothillsOne night at Haridwar or Rishikesh. We do not send anyone up the mountain on the day they arrive.
The four-dham circuit10–12 days at the traditional road pace, including the buffer days the weather will eventually claim.
Coming homeOne day.

So roughly 13–15 days door to door for all four dhams by road from Kolkata. If that is more leave than anyone in the family can take, the honest answer is not to compress the four — mountain roads do not compress. The answer is to do fewer, properly. The Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath together — is the shape most short-on-time eastern families choose, and it is a complete pilgrimage in its own right, not a consolation prize. Helicopter assistance on the Kedarnath leg shortens things further; we plan and cost that separately so you can see exactly what it buys you.

Before you book

Registration, Season, and the Thin Air

Registration is mandatory, and it is free. Every pilgrim must register — along with your vehicle — before starting the journey, on the Uttarakhand government portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, operated by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. That is the official government portal, the portal itself calls registration a free exercise, and nobody should ever charge you a rupee for it. We file it for every person in your booked group and send you the confirmation before you leave Kolkata.

Who actually runs the temples. Kedarnath and Badrinath are managed by the Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), constituted under a 1939 Act. That is the body to check any agent's claims against. If someone quotes you a different Char Dham management authority for these two temples, ask them to show you where it says so.

The season. Uttarakhand Tourism gives May to October as the Char Dham Yatra season; Badrinath is described as open about six months in the year, closing around October or November and reopening around April. The exact kapat opening and closing dates are fixed afresh every year on the traditional muhurats and announced by the temple committees — which is why we will never quote you a date we have not seen declared. Tell us your month and we will tell you where the declarations stand for that year.

Altitude. Kolkata sits at sea level. Nothing in Bengal prepares the lungs for 3,580 m at Kedarnath or 3,415 m at Gangotri. Walk slowly, drink more water than you want to, sleep low before you go high, and carry your own regular medicines rather than trusting a mountain pharmacy to stock them.

Who should think again about the trek. The 16 km to Kedarnath is a real mountain walk, and the climb from Janki Chatti up to Yamunotri is short but steep. If anyone in the group has a heart or breathing condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, has had recent surgery, is in late pregnancy, or is simply not walking comfortably at home in Kolkata — get a doctor's clearance first and decide the alternatives before you travel, not at the trailhead. At Yamunotri, Uttarakhand Tourism notes that devotees either walk or ride a palanquin or a pony up from Janki Chatti; at Kedarnath the official IRCTC yatra portal notes that pony and porter services are available to reach the temple, and the helicopter serves Kedarnath. Choosing the palki is not failing the yatra.

The helicopter, honestly. The official IRCTC portal at heliyatra.irctc.co.in states plainly that only it provides online helicopter ticket booking for Shri Kedarnath Dham, and that Char Dham yatra registration on the Uttarakhand government portal is mandatory before you can book a helicopter seat online at all. So if someone is selling you a Kedarnath heli seat online from anywhere else, it is not an official online ticket, however convincing the brochure. We help you book on the official portal; we never resell what cannot be resold.

తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు

Questions Kolkata pilgrims ask us

Is there a direct flight from Kolkata towards the Char Dham?

Yes — the Airports Authority of India's published Dehradun Airport schedule for August 2026 lists a direct Kolkata–Dehradun sector operating Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, landing at Jolly Grant Airport around midday, with that entry valid until 23 October 2026. We do not print the carrier or flight number here, because that is exactly the detail that changes between seasons. Dehradun is the practical air gateway: from Jolly Grant it is a short road transfer down to Rishikesh or Haridwar, where the yatra begins. Schedules change every season, so we reconfirm your exact flight before we lock the plan.

Should we go by train from Howrah instead?

Many Bengali families prefer to, and it is a perfectly good way to travel — just plan it as a cross-country haul rather than an overnight trip. Train numbers, running days and timings shift every season, so we do not publish one here and let you build a fortnight around it. Send us your dates and we look up the current railway timetable and confirm in writing which service suits you, which class, and how long you will be on board — plus the rest night at Haridwar or Rishikesh before the mountain roads start.

How many days of leave do I need from Kolkata?

Plan on roughly 13–15 days door to door for all four dhams by road — one day out, a rest night in the foothills, 10–12 days on the circuit including weather buffer, and one day home. If you have a week or so, do not squeeze the four; do the Do Dham instead — Kedarnath and Badrinath — which is a complete yatra on its own. Helicopter assistance on the Kedarnath leg can shorten the circuit further.

Is the Char Dham registration really compulsory, and does it cost anything?

It is compulsory and it is free. Every pilgrim, and every vehicle, must be registered before the journey begins, on the Uttarakhand government portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — the official portal, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, which describes registration as a free exercise. Keep the registration letter ready for the verification points at the dhams, and note that you cannot book the Kedarnath helicopter online without your registration number. We file it for everyone in your booked group and send you the confirmation before you leave Kolkata. If anyone quotes you a fee for the registration itself, walk away.

My parents are in their seventies and we live at sea level. Can they do this?

Often yes, with the right pacing and honest preparation — and sometimes the loving answer is no. Kedarnath stands at 3,580 m with a 16 km trek from Gaurikund; Gangotri stands at about 3,415 m, though there the road reaches the temple; Yamunotri asks for a short but steep climb from Janki Chatti. For a family coming from sea level that is a genuine jump. Get a doctor's clearance for anyone with a heart or breathing condition or uncontrolled blood pressure, tell us the ages at enquiry, and let us build in slower ascent, low-altitude sleeping halts, and pony, palanquin or helicopter support from the start rather than improvising at the trailhead.

Which months are best for a Kolkata family, and which should we avoid?

Uttarakhand Tourism gives May to October as the yatra season, and for Yamunotri recommends April to June and September to November — which tells you plainly enough what the Garhwal hills are doing in the deep monsoon weeks between. The Pujo holidays fall in the later of those windows, which is why they suit so many Kolkata families; it is also when a great many others from Bengal travel, so hotels and vehicles on the route go early. Tell us your month as soon as you know it and we will hold the plan.

How much does the Char Dham Yatra from Kolkata cost?

It depends entirely on your travel month, group size, hotel category, whether you fly or take the train, and whether you want helicopter support at Kedarnath — so we do not publish a number that would be wrong for most people who read it. Send us your dates and group on WhatsApp and you get one fixed written quote covering everything from your Kolkata departure to your return, itemised, with nothing added later.
