Getting there

How Bengaluru Pilgrims Reach the Yatra

The Char Dham is not a place you land at. It is a circuit that begins on the plains — at Haridwar or Rishikesh — and climbs into the Garhwal Himalaya from there. So the first question from Bengaluru is not which temple first. It is how do we get to the foot of the mountains, and what does that cost us in days.

By air. Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is the airport nearest Rishikesh and Haridwar, and the practical entry point for the yatra. Do not assume a same-day direct from Bengaluru — airlines add and drop that route by season, and the schedule that existed last year may not exist on your dates. The dependable shape is Bengaluru to a North Indian hub, then onward to Dehradun by air or to Haridwar by road or rail. When you send us your travel month we check what is actually operating before we build a single day of the plan around it.

By train. Direct long-distance trains do connect Bengaluru with the north, but the journey runs well past a full day in each direction. On a yatra that already asks for a fortnight, that is four days spent watching the country go by. Some families take the train one way — as part of the pilgrimage, deliberately — and fly home.

Count the transfer day. Both of them. Whichever way you travel, budget one full day to get from Bengaluru to the yatra base and one to get home. Reaching Haridwar or Rishikesh in the evening and beginning the mountain drive at first light the next morning is how the circuit is meant to open — and it is also how a delayed connection stops being a missed dham.

The circuit

The Four Dhams, in the Order Tradition Sets

Four shrines, one circuit, and a sequence that is not arbitrary. The yatra moves west to east — Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, then Badrinath — from the sources of the two rivers, to Shiva at Kedar, and last to Vishnu at Badri. Every Satmarg itinerary follows that order, and where weather forces a change we tell you why rather than quietly reshuffling the days.

DhamWhat it isHow you reach the temple
YamunotriTraditional source of the YamunaRoad to Janki Chatti, then a steep trek up. Pony and palanquin help is the usual option for those who cannot walk it; we check what is running on your dates.
GangotriTraditional source of the GangaReached by road. The gentlest of the four.
KedarnathJyotirlinga of ShivaRoad to Sonprayag and Gaurikund, then a long uphill trek. Pony, palanquin, or the helicopter leg.
BadrinathSeat of VishnuReached by road. Many pilgrims bathe at the Tapt Kund before darshan.

Kedarnath and Badrinath are administered by the Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) — the body that runs both shrines and takes their puja bookings. You may still find older pages naming a Char Dham "Devasthanam Board" as the authority; that body was dissolved in 2021 and no longer exists. If someone quotes it to you, they are working from stale information.

If four dhams is more time than your family can take in one year, the Do Dham Yatra — Kedarnath and Badrinath alone — is the honest shorter version. Many Bengaluru families do that first and return for Yamunotri and Gangotri in a later season.

The plan

How Many Days to Budget from Bengaluru

Pilgrims who start from the North Indian plains can treat the Char Dham as a far shorter trip. From Bengaluru it is not, and pretending otherwise is how yatras go wrong. Here is how we actually count the days, door to door:

StageDaysWhat happens
Bengaluru → Haridwar / Rishikesh1Flight via a North Indian hub, or the long rail journey. Night halt at the yatra base.
The Yamunotri arm2–3Mountain drive to the Barkot side, then the trek up and back.
The Gangotri arm2Drive via Uttarkashi. The day is driving, not climbing.
Kedarnath2–3A long transfer day, a night at lower altitude, then the trek or the helicopter leg.
Badrinath2Mountain highway via Joshimath, then darshan.
Return + Bengaluru2Descent to the plains, then the flight or train home.

Plan for roughly a fortnight for the full road circuit from Bengaluru, and treat any itinerary that promises the four dhams and both transfer days inside ten days as either flying you over most of it or cutting darshan time to make the arithmetic work.

Build in a buffer day. In the Garhwal, weather decides the schedule — not the itinerary. A landslide, a shut gate, or a grounded helicopter costs half a day, and the pilgrim with no slack loses a dham. We put the buffer in every plan and you will usually not need it.

A helicopter-assisted circuit compresses the mountain days considerably — it is the reason many Bengaluru families with limited leave manage the four dhams at all. We will tell you exactly how many days your version takes when we send the itinerary, not before.

Know before you go

Registration, Season & Altitude

Registration is mandatory, and it is free. Every pilgrim must register before starting the journey to the Char Dham, and your vehicle is registered too. The only official portal is the Government of Uttarakhand's registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board in Dehradun. It costs nothing. Anyone asking you to pay for the registration itself is selling you something that is free. We complete it for every pilgrim in your booked group before you leave Bengaluru, so it is one less thing to sort out from the other end of the country.

The season. The kapat of the four dhams open around Akshaya Tritiya, in late April or early May, and close for the winter in October or November. The exact dates are fixed afresh every year on the Hindu calendar and announced ahead of the season — so they move, and any page quoting you next year's dates today is guessing. Ask us and we will tell you what has actually been declared for your season.

Which months. Our advice for South Indian families: aim for the settled windows on either side of the monsoon rather than July and August, when Garhwal rain, landslides, and closed highways can strand a group for a day at a time. The opening weeks and the days around the closing are spiritually charged and correspondingly crowded.

Altitude is the thing Bengaluru underestimates. Bengaluru sits high enough to be pleasant; Kedarnath and Badrinath sit high enough that the air is thin and cold even in June. Coming from sea-level heat into that in two days is a real physiological jump. We plan a night at lower altitude before the Kedarnath leg, keep the walking slow, and do not stack two hard days together. Carry your regular medicines, and if anyone in the group has a cardiac, respiratory, or blood-pressure condition, see your doctor in Bengaluru before you book — not at Gaurikund.

Who should think again about the trek. The Kedarnath climb from Gaurikund is a long one, gaining height the whole way, and the Yamunotri path is short but steep. If a family member cannot manage a long uphill day, that is not a failure — it is information. The options are real ones: pony and palanquin help on the Yamunotri and Kedarnath paths, a helicopter leg for Kedarnath, or the shorter Do Dham Yatra. On helicopters, the Uttarakhand government's own yatra portal is blunt: heli services can be booked only through IRCTC, on the HeliYatra portal at heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Treat anyone selling you seats outside it with suspicion. Tell us the ages and the health of everyone travelling and we will tell you plainly which version of the yatra fits — including when the answer is "not this one".

Plan the details

Every Route, Season Note & Package

Full route legs, dham-by-dham detail, helicopter and road options, and all our Char Dham packages organised by days available live on our main Char Dham Yatra hub. For families with less leave, the shorter Do Dham Yatra covers Kedarnath and Badrinath. Mountain schedules change with the weather and the temple committees' announcements, so when you travel with us we reconfirm timings, road conditions, and any helicopter booking before you fly out of Bengaluru.

How it works

  1. 1

    Send us an enquiry

Travel month, group size, the age and health of your eldest travellers, and whether you are open to a helicopter leg. WhatsApp or the form below — either works.

  2. 2

We send an itinerary and a fixed written quote

Day by day, including both Bengaluru transfer days and the buffer. Hotels, vehicles, and inclusions in writing on WhatsApp. Revise it as many times as you need.

  3. 3

    Confirm, we file and lock

We complete the free Uttarakhand registration for every pilgrim, hold the mountain-route hotels, book the vehicle, and, if your plan has a Kedarnath helicopter leg, book it for you on the official IRCTC portal — subject to what is available on your dates.

  4. 4

    Travel with someone reachable

You are met at the airport or station. Through the yatra our team is on the phone in Hindi or English — for weather changes, gate closures, and the small things that come up at altitude.

తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు

Questions Bengaluru pilgrims ask us

Is there a direct flight from Bengaluru to Dehradun for the Char Dham?

Do not plan on it. Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Rishikesh and Haridwar, but airlines add and drop the Bengaluru route by season and a schedule that ran last year may not run on your dates. The reliable plan is Bengaluru to a North Indian hub, then onward to Dehradun by air or to Haridwar by road or rail. Send us your travel month on WhatsApp and we check what is genuinely operating before we build the itinerary.

How many days of leave should we take from Bengaluru?

Plan for about a fortnight for the full four-dham road circuit, door to door — the mountain days plus one transfer day at each end plus a buffer. A helicopter-assisted circuit shortens the mountain portion considerably and is what most Bengaluru families with limited leave choose. If even that is too long, the Do Dham Yatra covering Kedarnath and Badrinath is the shorter route to the two shrines most pilgrims come for.

Do we have to register, and will you do it for us?

Yes, every pilgrim must register before starting the journey, and it is free. The only official portal is the Government of Uttarakhand's registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board — your vehicle is registered along with the travellers. We complete it for every pilgrim in your booked group before you leave Bengaluru. Nobody should ever charge you for the registration itself.

Which months are best, and which should we avoid?

The dhams open around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and close for winter in October or November, with the exact dates declared fresh each year. Aim for the settled windows on either side of the monsoon; we advise against July and August, when Garhwal rain and landslides can hold a group up for a day at a time. Opening week and the days before the kapat close are the most charged and the most crowded.

My parents are in their seventies. Can they do the Char Dham?

Sometimes, and it depends on more than age. Gangotri and Badrinath are reached by road. Yamunotri needs a short steep climb and Kedarnath a long uphill trek from Gaurikund — pony and palanquin help is the usual option on both routes, and a helicopter leg removes the Kedarnath climb entirely. What you cannot remove is the altitude, and coming from Bengaluru's climate that jump is real. Have their doctor clear them before you book, tell us the health details honestly, and we will say plainly which version fits — including when our answer is the Do Dham Yatra instead.

We speak Kannada and English at home. Will language be a problem in Garhwal?

Not in any way that affects your yatra. Our team works in Hindi and English throughout, your driver and the mountain hotels are handled by us rather than by you, and your pre-departure briefing explains every ritual, temple, and checkpoint in plain English before you leave Bengaluru. Tell us your language preference in the enquiry and we match the guide accordingly wherever the route allows.

How much does a Char Dham package from Bangalore cost?

It depends on your travel month, group size, hotel category, and whether your plan includes a helicopter leg — so we do not publish a number that would be wrong for most of the season. Send us your dates and group on WhatsApp and you get one fixed written quote with everything itemised, including the transfer days. Nothing is added on the mountain.
