Makar Sankranti is the one great festival fixed by the sun, not the moon: the moment Surya enters Makara rashi. In 2027 that moment comes a little after 9 PM IST on Thursday, 14 January — after sunset. When the sankranti falls at night, the panchang moves the snan-daan to the following daylight, so the festival is observed on Friday, 15 January 2027.

Some calendars print 14 January; for 2027 the panchang is clear — the snan belongs to the 15th. Every arrangement we make is planned around the Friday morning.
With the sankranti begins Uttarayan — the sun's northward run — which is why the shastras count a Ganga snan on this morning among the most meritorious of the year, and why the ghats of Kashi fill from before first light.
The traditions
Khichdi, Til-Daan and the Ganga at Dawn
In Kashi and across eastern Uttar Pradesh, Makar Sankranti goes by the name of its own prasad: Khichdi. Rice and dal are cooked together in nearly every home, eaten as the day's meal, and — just as importantly — given: khichdi, til (sesame), gud (jaggery), blankets and warm clothes pass from those who have to those who need, for daan on this day is held to carry many times its ordinary merit.

Til has its own place in the vidhi — mixed into the bathing water, offered in tarpan, eaten as til-gud, and given as daan.
Mid-January mornings by the river are genuinely cold. Bring woolens for the walk to the ghat; the dip itself is quick, and hot chai is never far.
