The tradition
What is the Jagannath Puri Yatra?
Jagannath Puri is the eastern dham of Adi Shankaracharya's pan-India Char Dham — alongside Badrinath (north), Rameshwaram (south), and Dwarka (west). The yatra centres on the great Shri Mandir of Bhagavan Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra. Pilgrims partake of the famous Mahaprasad cooked at the world's largest temple kitchen, bathe at the Mahodadhi (Bay of Bengal), and (in Ashadha) witness the world-famous Rath Yatra. Many families combine Puri with Konark Sun Temple (32 km) and Bhubaneswar.

Shri Mandir Darshan, Mahaprasad & the Rhythm of Puri
The Shri Mandir follows a long-standing tradition of admitting only Hindus into the temple precinct — we state this plainly and respectfully, as the temple does. Non-Hindu companions can view the temple from the rooftop of the Raghunandan Library across the Bada Danda. Inside, the day moves by the nitis — the ancient sequence of rituals around Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra — so darshan pauses and resumes through the day.
| Experience | What to know |
|---|---|
| Shri Mandir darshan | Enter by the Singha Dwara (Lion Gate). Phones, cameras and leather items go into the cloakroom. Darshan pauses during bhog and certain nitis |
| Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar | Cooked in the temple's vast kitchen in stacked earthen pots over wood fires — the chhappan bhog tradition of 56 offerings. Eaten seated in the bazar within the temple compound, sharing with strangers as equals |
| Rath Yatra | Held each Ashadha (June–July), when the three deities ride their chariots down the Bada Danda to the Gundicha temple. Dates follow the temple's lunar calendar — we confirm as soon as they are announced |
| Mahodadhi snan | The traditional sea bath at Puri's shore before darshan. Swargadwar is the classic bathing ghat; the sea can be rough — bathe where lifeguards are posted |
| Golden Beach & Konark | Puri's Blue Flag certified beach for the evening; the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple is about an hour's drive up the Marine Drive |
Puri is the eastern seat of the pan-India Char Dham — with Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameshwaram — which is why pilgrims from every corner of the country converge here. Niti timings shift daily with the ritual calendar — we reconfirm darshan windows before your visit.
Getting here
How to Reach Puri
Puri sits on the Bay of Bengal at the end of its own rail line — the station is barely 2 km from the Shri Mandir. Every Satmarg package includes pickup from Puri station or Bhubaneswar airport.
| From | By train | By air |
|---|---|---|
| Kolkata / Howrah | Vande Bharat Express ~6 hrs; many daily trains, overnight options | ~1 hr to Bhubaneswar |
| Delhi | Purushottam Express and others, overnight-plus routes direct to Puri | ~2 hrs to Bhubaneswar, direct flights daily |
| Mumbai / Bengaluru / Hyderabad / Chennai | Long rail routes — most pilgrims fly | Direct flights to Bhubaneswar daily |
| Bhubaneswar | Frequent trains, ~1–1.5 hrs | Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) is ~60 km from Puri — about 1.5 hrs by road |
Bhubaneswar (BBI) is the airport for Puri — the 60 km drive takes around an hour and a half. Puri railway station receives direct trains from most of India. Within Puri, distances are short: cycle-rickshaws and e-rickshaws cover the stretch between the Bada Danda, the beach and your hotel.

Jagannath Puri Yatra — Frequently Asked
Is the Shri Mandir open to all?
The Shri Mandir has a long-standing tradition of permitting only Hindus into the inner precinct. Non-Hindu visitors can have an excellent outside darshan from the Raghunandan Library across the road. Please respect this temple tradition.
When is the Rath Yatra in 2026?
Rath Yatra 2026 falls in June-July (specific date set by the temple committee based on the Hindu calendar — Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya). We confirm exact dates and book all logistics once announced.
How do I get Mahaprasad?
Mahaprasad is available daily inside the temple at the Anand Bazaar after the bhog rituals. We arrange Mahaprasad delivery to your hotel if you cannot eat at the bazaar; officially-sealed Mahaprasad packets are also available for taking home.
Can I take phones inside Shri Mandir?
No. Mobile phones, cameras, leather wallets, and large bags are not permitted. Cloakroom available at the Singha Dwara (Lion Gate) entrance.
Can elderly pilgrims do Puri yatra?
Yes — Puri is one of the gentler tirthas. The Shri Mandir queues can be long but the temple is at ground level. Cycle-rickshaws and e-rickshaws cover the short distances within Puri. Hotels near Bada Danda minimise walking.
Should I add Konark and Bhubaneswar?
Konark Sun Temple (32 km from Puri, 1 hour) is highly recommended — UNESCO World Heritage. Bhubaneswar (65 km) has Lingaraj Temple and Mukteshwar. Add 1 day for Konark and 1 day for Bhubaneswar.
Can I combine Puri with the other Adi Char Dhams?
Yes — the full Adi Char Dham yatra of Adi Shankara covers Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram, and Dwarka in 15-20 days. See /tours/adi-char-dham-yatra.
How far ahead should I plan for Rath Yatra?
At least six months. Rath Yatra falls each Ashadha (June–July) — the exact date follows the temple's lunar calendar — and Puri's hotels along the Bada Danda sell out well before summer. Lakhs of pilgrims attend; expect dense crowds, road closures, and long waits for a glimpse of the chariots. We block rooms early and plan viewing positions along the route as soon as dates are announced.
What is the tradition of bathing in the sea at Puri?
The Mahodadhi — the ocean at Puri — is itself held sacred, and pilgrims traditionally take a snan (holy dip) before darshan at the Shri Mandir, most commonly near Swargadwar. The surf can be strong; bathe at stretches where lifeguards are posted, and prefer early morning when the sea is calmer. Golden Beach, Puri's Blue Flag certified beach, is a short ride away for a gentler evening by the water.
When is the best time to visit Puri, and for how long?
October to February is the most comfortable window — clear days, a fresh sea breeze, and the Konark drive at its best. Rath Yatra (June–July) is the great festival experience but demands crowd tolerance and early booking. Three days suits most families: darshan and Mahaprasad, the sea and Golden Beach, and a day for Konark — add a fourth for Bhubaneswar's temples or Chilika Lake.
