Getting there

How a Hyderabad Family Reaches the Yatra Start

Hyderabad sits about as far from the Garhwal Himalaya as a pilgrim in India can be. It helps to say the plain thing first: the Char Dham Yatra does not begin at a temple. It begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh, where the plains end and the mountain road starts. Everything before that is transfer, and an honest plan budgets for it instead of pretending it away.

By air. Almost every Hyderabad family flies. From Hyderabad's international airport you fly north — to Delhi, or, when the season's schedules allow it, onward to Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, which Uttarakhand Tourism lists as the nearest airport to Rishikesh, about 21 km away. We deliberately do not print flight numbers or timings on this page: airline schedules on this sector change season to season, and a number that is wrong is worse than no number at all. Send us your travel month and we check what is actually flying on your dates before we build the itinerary around it.

By train. Hyderabad's main stations sit on the long north-bound trunk routes, and pilgrims who love the train do make this journey. Be clear-eyed about it — it is a very long haul, and it spends days at both ends of a yatra that is already long. We suggest rail only when the journey itself is something your family wants, never as a way to save time. Check current timings on indianrail.gov.in or IRCTC for your dates, book what suits you, and we will build the Uttarakhand end around it.

By road. Some families do drive up. A self-drive from Hyderabad to Garhwal and back is its own expedition, on top of a mountain circuit that is already demanding — we do not recommend it for a first Char Dham.

Whichever way you come, the yatra we plan begins where you land or step down. Pickup, the road leg to Haridwar or Rishikesh, and the first night's rest are part of the plan, not something you arrange alone at the end of a long day.

How long to budget

Count the Transfer Days, Not Just the Yatra

The number Hyderabad families most often get wrong is not the yatra — it is what sits on either side of it. Add a travelling day at each end, and one day of slack.

LegWhat to budget
Hyderabad → Haridwar / RishikeshEffectively one full travelling day — the flight north plus the onward road leg. We plan you to arrive with an evening in hand, not to start the mountain drive the same night you land.
The yatra itselfThe full four-dham road circuit runs into double figures in days; the helicopter darshan is far shorter. Current durations for each option are on our Char Dham Yatra hub.
Weather slackOne unbooked day. Mountain roads close and helicopter sorties are grounded for reasons nobody controls. A yatra with no slack becomes a missed flight home.
Return to HyderabadAnother travelling day. We never book your return flight for the same evening you come down from the hills.

Put together, a full road Char Dham realistically means around two weeks away from home for a Hyderabad family, once transfers and slack are counted. The helicopter route compresses that considerably — it is the reason most working families and most elderly pilgrims from the South choose it.

If your leave simply will not stretch, do not cut corners inside the circuit. Take the shorter pilgrimage honestly: Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath covers the two shrines most pilgrims come for, and Yamunotri and Gangotri wait for another year. Half a yatra done properly is worth more than four dhams done at a run.

The four dhams

Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — and Why That Order

The Uttarakhand Char Dham is traditionally undertaken in one sequence: Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and Badrinath last — the same order in which Uttarakhand Tourism itself lists the four. It is not a travel agent's convenience. You begin at the two river-sources, are cleansed by the Yamuna and the Ganga, come to Shiva at Kedarnath, and only then stand before Vishnu at Badrinath, the seat of liberation. Pilgrims have understood these four as one circuit, not four trips, for centuries.

DhamWhat it isReaching the shrine
YamunotriShrine of Goddess Yamuna, held to be the daughter of SuryaMotorable road ends at Janki Chatti; a trek from there, with pony and palki for those who cannot walk it
GangotriWhere the river rises as the Bhagirathi, before it is called GangaMotorable road runs up to Gangotri — the gentlest of the four
KedarnathOne of the twelve Jyotirlingas of ShivaA 16 km route from Gaurikund; pony and palki, or a helicopter sortie
BadrinathVishnu's Himalayan seat, on the banks of the AlaknandaWell connected by motorable road

Kedarnath and Badrinath are administered by the Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), constituted under a 1939 Act and working under the Government of Uttarakhand. Puja bookings and temple arrangements at these two dhams go through BKTC — which is why we work to their calendar, not around it.

Helicopter to Kedarnath. Helicopter services to Kedarnath exist, and booking runs through the official government-authorised channel for that season. We will not name operators, sectors or fares to you on a web page — those change, and the wrong number costs you money. What we will do is confirm the current official booking route for your dates, book through it, and tell you exactly what it came to, in writing.

One thing worth clearing up for pilgrims from the South: this Char Dham is the Himalayan one. The pan-India Char Dham of Adi Shankaracharya — Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka — is a different pilgrimage altogether, and lives on our Adi Char Dham Yatra page. Badrinath is the only shrine on both lists.

Before you commit

Registration, Season & the Altitude Nobody Warns You About

Registration is mandatory, and it is free. Every pilgrim — and every vehicle — must be registered before the journey to the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib. It is done on the official Government of Uttarakhand portal, registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. That is the only official site, and there is no fee for it. Anyone charging you a government registration fee is charging you for nothing. We complete this for every pilgrim in your booked group, and you should expect the registration to be asked for on the yatra routes.

The season. The four dhams are open only for part of the year. Uttarakhand Tourism puts it plainly for Badrinath: the temple stays open about six months a year, closes from October or November, and reopens around April. The exact kapat dates are declared afresh every year, so do not plan against last season's calendar. Ask us and we will confirm the declared dates for your year before you book a single ticket. As this page is written, the 2026 yatra is in progress and the temples are receiving pilgrims.

The altitude is the real thing to plan for. All four dhams sit high in the Garhwal Himalaya — Uttarakhand Tourism puts Kedarnath at about 3,580 m, Yamunotri at about 3,233 m and Badrinath at about 3,100 m — and Hyderabad sits far lower, so your body has done nothing to prepare. Thin air, cold mornings even in June, long mountain driving days, and weather that rearranges the schedule without asking. Give yourself a night at moderate altitude before the hard days, drink far more water than feels natural, and do not treat breathlessness as something to push through.

Who should think again about the Kedarnath trek. Please talk to your own doctor first, and be honest in that conversation, if any of this is true: a cardiac or respiratory condition, blood pressure that is not steady, a recent surgery, an advanced pregnancy, or simply not being able to walk a few kilometres uphill at home. Reconsidering the trek does not mean giving up the darshan. Pony and palki services are available, the helicopter route exists for exactly this reason, and a well-planned Do Dham is a complete pilgrimage in its own right. Tell us the ages and health of everyone travelling in your first message — it changes the plan more than any other detail you can give us.

How we plan it from Hyderabad

  1. 1

    1. Tell us your month, your group, and your ages

Travel month, how many of you, everyone's ages and any health conditions, and whether you are leaning towards the road circuit or the helicopter darshan. WhatsApp or the form below — no commitment.

  2. 2

    2. We check what is actually flying, then plan around it

We look at real schedules for your dates from Hyderabad, work out the transfer days at both ends, and send you a day-by-day itinerary with the season's declared kapat dates confirmed.

  3. 3

    3. A fixed written quote on WhatsApp

One number, in writing, before you pay anything — hotels, vehicles, permits, taxes, everything stated. We never publish a price on a page, because the honest one depends on your dates, your group and your route.

  4. 4

    4. Registration, bookings, and a team you can reach

We file the free Uttarakhand registration for every pilgrim, lock hotels, vehicles and any helicopter slots, and stay reachable through the yatra — for weather changes, rebookings, and the small things that come up at altitude.

తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు

Questions Hyderabad pilgrims ask us

How do we actually get from Hyderabad to the start of the Char Dham?

The yatra starts at Haridwar or Rishikesh, not at a temple — so the first task is getting to the plains at the foot of Garhwal. Most Hyderabad families fly north from Hyderabad's international airport, either to Delhi or, when the season's schedules allow, onward to Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun, which Uttarakhand Tourism lists as the nearest airport to Rishikesh, about 21 km away. Rail from Hyderabad is possible but very long. We do not publish flight numbers here because schedules change every season; send us your dates and we check what is really flying before planning around it.

How many days should we budget from Hyderabad?

Take whatever the Uttarakhand itinerary says and add a travelling day at each end plus one day of weather slack. For the full four-dham road circuit that realistically means about two weeks away from home. The helicopter darshan compresses it considerably, which is why most working families and elderly pilgrims from the South choose it. If your leave will not stretch, take Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath — properly rather than rushing all four.

Is Char Dham registration compulsory, and do you handle it?

Yes, it is compulsory for every pilgrim and every vehicle, and yes, we handle it. It is done on the official Government of Uttarakhand portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board, and it is completely free — nobody should be charging you a government registration fee. We complete it for everyone in your booked group before you travel.

My parents are in their late sixties. Can they do the yatra?

Often yes, with the right shape of plan — but the altitude is real and Hyderabad sits far lower, so their bodies arrive unprepared. Gangotri and Badrinath are reached by motorable road. Yamunotri and Kedarnath involve trekking, with pony and palki available, and Uttarakhand Tourism puts the Gaurikund–Kedarnath route at 16 km. For elders we usually plan the helicopter darshan, build in acclimatisation and rest, and ask for a doctor's clearance first. If there is a cardiac or respiratory condition, unsteady blood pressure, or a recent surgery, please have that conversation with your physician before booking anything.

When is the season, and when should we travel?

The shrines are open roughly half the year: Uttarakhand Tourism says Badrinath closes from October or November and reopens around April. The exact kapat dates are declared afresh each year, so we confirm the declared dates for your year before you book anything. The monsoon weeks are the hardest on these mountain roads, so families with elders or young children usually do better either side of them. Tell us your possible months and we will tell you honestly which one to choose.

Is this the same Char Dham as Rameswaram and Dwarka?

No — and it is worth being clear, because the names overlap. This page is the Himalayan Char Dham of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The pan-India Char Dham associated with Adi Shankaracharya is Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram and Dwarka — a completely different journey, which we plan separately on our Adi Char Dham Yatra page. Badrinath is the one shrine that belongs to both.

What does a Char Dham package from Hyderabad cost?

We do not publish a figure, because an honest one depends on your travel month, your group size, whether you go by road or helicopter, and the hotel category — any number printed on a page would be wrong for most people reading it. Send us your dates and group on WhatsApp and you get one fixed written quote with everything included and nothing added later.
