Getting there

How a Mumbai Pilgrim Actually Reaches the Char Dham

There is no straight line from Mumbai to the dhams. From here the Char Dham is a fly-then-road yatra — you travel north first, and only then does the pilgrimage begin. Any itinerary that folds those transfer days out of sight is quietly borrowing them from your leave.

Flying north. Regular direct flights connect Mumbai with Delhi, and from Delhi it is a road or rail transfer up to Haridwar or Rishikesh, where the yatra proper starts. Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun is the airport nearest the yatra start, and it saves you the long Delhi–Haridwar leg when a workable connection exists. How many flights reach Dehradun from Mumbai changes with the season, so we check live schedules against your actual dates rather than assume — and if the only sensible routing means a night in Delhi, we tell you at the planning stage, not on day one.

By train. Long-distance trains do run north from Mumbai towards Haridwar and Dehradun. The distance is the whole story: the rail journey eats far more of your leave than the flight does. Families who want the old, unhurried approach to the mountains sometimes choose it on purpose. Families counting days off almost never do. We plan either, but we do not let you discover the cost in days after you have booked.

Then the mountain road. From Haridwar or Rishikesh onward, the Char Dham is entirely a Garhwal road pilgrimage — dark early starts, long hours on ghat roads, gate-controlled stretches, and weather that has the final say on the day's plan. This part cannot be compressed, and we do not build itineraries that pretend it can.

The tradition

The Four Dhams, and the Order They Are Walked

The four dhams are approached in a fixed sequence, and the sequence is itself part of the pilgrimage — Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and last Badrinath. You begin at the two rivers that carry mercy down to the plains, climb to the Jyotirlinga, and finish at the seat of Vishnu. Every Satmarg itinerary follows this order.

DhamWhy pilgrims comeHow you reach the temple
YamunotriSource of the YamunaA short but steep climb from Janki Chatti; pony and palki available for those who need them
GangotriSource of the GangaThe road reaches the temple. Tarpan on the Bhagirathi and Gangajal carried home
KedarnathThe JyotirlingaAbout 16 km on foot from Gaurikund, or a helicopter shuttle — the hardest day of the yatra
BadrinathVishnu's seatThe road reaches the temple. Tapt Kund before darshan

Kedarnath and Badrinath are administered by the Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), constituted under a 1939 Act; both shrines are believed to have been established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Shrine detail, package shapes and every itinerary we run live on our main Char Dham Yatra hub.

Your leave

How Many Days to Budget from Mumbai

This is where Mumbai families are most often misled, so here is the arithmetic in the open.

StageWhat it costs you
Going upFly Mumbai to Delhi or Dehradun, then transfer by road to Haridwar or Rishikesh. One day if connections behave; sometimes a night in Delhi first.
The yatraOur road itineraries for all four dhams run roughly ten to twelve days from Haridwar, with buffer days built in. In the Himalaya the mountain sets the pace, and a schedule with no slack in it is a schedule that breaks.
Coming homeReturn from Rishikesh or Haridwar to Dehradun or Delhi, then fly to Mumbai. Often a night before the flight rather than a same-day dash off the mountain.

So a full four-dham road yatra from Mumbai is realistically close to a fortnight of leave — not the ten days the itinerary headline suggests. We would rather you knew that before applying for leave than halfway up a ghat road.

If a fortnight is not available, there are two honest shorter paths. Helicopter-assisted itineraries compress the circuit considerably by flying the hardest legs. Or take the Do Dham Yatra — Kedarnath and Badrinath — which is a complete pilgrimage in its own right and a common first Himalayan yatra for families coming from far south. Many Mumbai pilgrims do Do Dham first and return for the full four another season.

Know before you go

Registration, Season & Altitude — the Three Things to Get Right

Registration is mandatory, and it is free. The Government of Uttarakhand requires every pilgrim — and every vehicle — to be registered before the journey begins, on the official portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. The same portal covers Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib. You build your itinerary and dates on it, add each pilgrim, and receive a Yatra Registration Letter carrying a QR code; you keep it ready with valid photo ID for verification at each shrine. Nobody should ever charge you for this. We complete it for every pilgrim in your group before you fly.

One correction worth carrying: older articles still name a Devasthanam Management Board as the authority for these temples. The Act that created it was withdrawn by the state government in November 2021. Kedarnath and Badrinath are run by BKTC, and registration is a Government of Uttarakhand process on the portal above.

Season. The kapat of each dham open around Akshaya Tritiya and close for the winter after Diwali — broadly late April or early May through October or November. The exact dates are fixed afresh each year by the temple authorities, and they move. We confirm the current season's dates with you when we plan rather than print dates that go stale. Avoid the peak monsoon weeks entirely; landslides shut Garhwal roads without warning, and no itinerary survives that.

Altitude, and why it matters more from Mumbai. You live at sea level. Within two days of leaving home you can be sleeping in thin, cold mountain air — a steeper jump than a pilgrim from Delhi or Dehradun makes. Breathlessness on a climb is normal and not a sign that something is wrong. A headache that will not lift, vomiting, or confusion are different, and they mean you go down, not on. We build acclimatisation nights into the itinerary and keep the climbing days slow, because rushing sea-level bodies uphill is how yatras end in a hospital instead of a temple.

Said plainly

Who Should Reconsider the Trek — and What We Do Instead

We would rather lose a booking than take someone up a mountain who should not be on it.

Reconsider the Kedarnath trek if you have a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, asthma or another breathing condition, are recovering from surgery, are in late pregnancy, or have simply not walked a hill in years. Mumbai is flat and at sea level. A fortnight of ghat roads and roughly 16 km of climbing from Gaurikund is a genuine physical event, not a scenic drive. Speak to your own doctor before you book, and tell us honestly what they said.

Saying no to the trek is not saying no to the yatra. Pony and porter services operate on the Kedarnath route, and pony or palanquin on the Yamunotri climb, for pilgrims who cannot walk the final stretch. Helicopter shuttles to Kedarnath exist and are booked only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal — IRCTC states that its site is the only one providing online helicopter ticket booking for Kedarnath, so an agent, a social-media page or any other website is not selling you a real seat. Your Uttarakhand registration has to be complete before those bookings can be made, which is one more reason we do it early.

And if four dhams are more than the body or the calendar allows, the Do Dham Yatra is not a consolation prize. Kedarnath and Badrinath, walked without hurry, is a whole pilgrimage. The mountains will still be there next season.

తరచుగా అడిగే ప్రశ్నలు

Questions Mumbai pilgrims ask us

How many days of leave do I actually need from Mumbai?

Budget close to a fortnight for all four dhams by road. Our road itineraries run roughly ten to twelve days from Haridwar, and you must add a travel day at each end for the flight north and the transfer to Haridwar or Rishikesh — sometimes with a night in Delhi if connections do not line up. Helicopter-assisted itineraries compress the circuit considerably, and the Do Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath) is shorter again. Tell us the leave you have and we will tell you honestly which of the three fits.

Should I fly to Delhi or to Dehradun?

Whichever the schedule actually supports on your dates. Regular direct flights connect Mumbai with Delhi, and from there it is a road or rail transfer to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun is nearer the yatra start and saves that leg when a workable connection exists, but flights into Dehradun from Mumbai vary through the season. We check live schedules against your dates instead of guessing, and we tell you upfront if the sensible routing needs a night in Delhi.

Is the Uttarakhand registration mandatory, and will you do it for us?

Yes, it is mandatory for every pilgrim and every vehicle before the journey begins, and it is free. It is done on the Government of Uttarakhand portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, which covers Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib. You receive a Yatra Registration Letter with a QR code, which is verified along with your photo ID at the shrines. We complete it for every pilgrim in your booked group before you fly. If anyone asks you to pay for the registration itself, that is not the government.

When does the yatra season open and close?

The kapat open around Akshaya Tritiya and close after Diwali — broadly late April or early May to October or November. The exact dates are fixed afresh every year by the temple authorities, so they shift from season to season. We confirm the current year's dates with you when we plan rather than publish numbers that age badly. Avoid the peak monsoon weeks; Garhwal landslides close roads and no itinerary survives them.

We live at sea level in Mumbai. Will the altitude be a problem?

It deserves respect rather than fear. Going from sea level to high Himalayan shrines within a couple of days is a bigger jump than most north Indian pilgrims make, so we build acclimatisation nights into the plan and keep the climbing days slow. Breathlessness while walking uphill is normal. A headache that will not clear, vomiting, or confusion are not — those mean descending, and our team on the ground will say so. Carry your regular medicines and warm layers; it is cold at the dhams even in summer.

My parents cannot walk 16 km to Kedarnath. What are the options?

Three, and none of them ends the yatra. Pony and porter services operate on the Kedarnath route, and pony or palanquin on the Yamunotri climb, for pilgrims who cannot manage the final stretch. Helicopter shuttles to Kedarnath exist and are booked only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal — IRCTC states its site is the only one providing online helicopter ticket booking for Kedarnath, so never buy from an agent or a social-media page; your Uttarakhand registration must be done first, because the portal requires it. Or take the Do Dham instead, which is a complete pilgrimage and gentler on the calendar. Tell us their ages and any medical conditions in your enquiry and the plan is built around them.

How much does a Char Dham package from Mumbai cost?

It depends on your travel month, group size, hotel category, and whether you fly any legs by helicopter — so we do not publish a number that would be wrong for half the season. Send us your dates and group on WhatsApp and you get a fixed written quote with everything itemised, including registration and transfers. Nothing gets added later on the mountain.
