Mana is a small Bhotia village of about 1,000 inhabitants on the Alaknanda-Saraswati confluence, just 3 km north of Badrinath dham. In 2022 the Government of India renamed it from "last village of India" to "first village of India" — a gentle reframing of the same border-settlement at the threshold of the Indo-Tibetan frontier. The village sits at 3,219 metres in the high Garhwal Himalaya; in winter it is buried under snow and the inhabitants migrate down to Chamoli district lower regions.
Mana is dense with Mahabharata associations. Vyas Gufa — the cave where Maharishi Vyas dictated the Mahabharata — sits on a low hillock above the village. Ganesh Gufa — where Ganesh wrote down the epic as Vyas dictated — is nearby; tradition holds Ganesh broke his tusk here to keep writing without stop. Bhim Pul — a natural rock arch over the Saraswati where Bhima placed a great rock to allow the Pandavas to cross during their final yatra to Swarga — is a short walk further. The Saraswati river emerges from a natural rock-source near the village, then quickly enters underground — the same Saraswati that surfaces at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.
The Mahabharata at Mana
The Mahabharata's long composition began here. Tradition holds that Vyas, having gathered the great story over years, sought a scribe who could keep up with the speed of his dictation. Ganesh agreed on condition that Vyas would never pause; Vyas accepted on condition that Ganesh would never write what he did not understand. The two conditions held the great composition in balance — when Vyas needed time to think, he gave a complex verse Ganesh had to pause over; when Ganesh's tusk broke, he used the broken tusk as a pen and continued. The Mahabharata as we have it was composed in these caves over many years.

Mana is held by the Mahabharata tradition to be the place of the great composition itself — the sutra-bhumi (ground of the principal text). Pilgrims who visit Vyas Gufa and Ganesh Gufa report a sense of the antiquity of the texts; the caves are dim, low, and lined with offerings of small pebble-piles and prayer flags. Tradition further holds that the Pandavas passed through Mana on their final yatra to Swarga, crossing the Saraswati at Bhim Pul; thus the village is also a closing-point of the Mahabharata, not only its compositional beginning.
చరిత్ర
Mana's settlement history reaches into antiquity — the village is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. The Bhotia people (a Himalayan community of Indo-Tibetan ethnicity) have inhabited the region for centuries, traditionally as wool-traders moving between Garhwal and western Tibet. The 2022 renaming and beautification was part of the wider Badrinath area redevelopment.
వాస్తుశిల్పం
Mana is a traditional Bhotia village — slate-roofed stone houses, narrow lanes, prayer-flag-strung courtyards. The Vyas and Ganesh Gufas are small natural rock caves with traditional offering-spaces inside; the rock face of Vyas Gufa is striated in a way that locals identify with the pages of the Mahabharata. Bhim Pul is a natural rock arch over the Saraswati gorge, about 50 metres below the village. The Saraswati source is marked by a small platform near the cliff-emergence point.
ఆచారాలు & పూజలు
There is no formal mandir or aarti at Mana — the sites are visited rather than worshipped in the temple-rite sense. The traditional sequence is: arrive from Badrinath by foot or short jeep ride, visit the Saraswati source first (to bow at the river before crossing), then Bhim Pul, then climb up to Vyas Gufa, then to the nearby Ganesh Gufa. Many pilgrims sit in the caves for some minutes of silent reflection on the Mahabharata.
Local Bhotia shops sell hand-woven wool products, brass items, and small dried Himalayan herbs. A short trek beyond Mana (5 km, restricted access) leads to Vasudhara Falls — a high cascade said by tradition to test the purity of pilgrims; only the pure of heart are touched by its spray. Permits for Vasudhara are obtained at the Mana entry-point.
