The Saryu is the sacred river that flows past Ayodhya — the river of Shri Ram's city, mentioned throughout the Ramayana as the river that received Ram's ancestors, that washed away the dust of his travels, and that finally received him at the close of his earthly lila. The principal ghat — also called Ram Ki Paidi — is a long stone-paved riverfront on the eastern edge of the old city, with broad steps descending to the water.

The ghat is the centre of the daily and seasonal devotional life of Ayodhya. At sunrise pilgrims bathe in the Saryu; through the day priests perform tarpan and pind-daan; at sunset the evening Saryu Aarti with great brass lamps and conch-blowing draws hundreds of pilgrims to sit on the steps and float small leaf-lamps into the river. On Choti Diwali in Kartik, the Saryu Ghats are the centre of the great Ayodhya Deep Utsav — over 25 lakh diyas are lit across the ghats and the wider city, in a luminous re-enactment of the original Diwali when Ayodhya welcomed home Shri Ram.

The Saryu in the Ramayana

The Saryu is one of the seven sacred rivers of Bharat in the Skanda Purana's reckoning. The Ramayana mentions her at many key moments: King Dasharatha bathed in her waters before his Ashvamedha Yajna; Shri Ram came to her ghats every morning of his Ayodhya household life; the cremation of Dasharatha was performed on her bank; and at the close of his lila, Shri Ram entered the Saryu near the present Guptar Ghat and returned to Vaikuntha. The river is thus held to carry the entire life-arc of the divine family.

Saryu Ghat is among the most spiritually charged ghats in north India. A bath at the Saryu — particularly at sunrise on Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya, or any of the major Ramayana festivals — is held to grant the merit of bathing in every tirtha of Bharat for a person of right faith. Pind-daan and tarpan at the Saryu are also revered; many north Indian families travel to Ayodhya specifically for ancestor rites.

The Deep Utsav of Ayodhya — held on Choti Diwali — has grown from a traditional local observance into a globally-recognised festival. In 2023 the event lit over 22 lakh diyas in a single evening; the 2024 Deep Utsav with the new Ram Mandir backdrop saw record participation. For the pilgrim or visitor, attending Deep Utsav once is held to be among the most spiritually memorable experiences of a lifetime.

చరిత్ర

The Saryu has flowed past Ayodhya for as long as the city has existed. The present stone-paved ghats were rebuilt and extended in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; the Ram Ki Paidi project of the 1980s-90s built the long curving stone-steps along the river-bend that pilgrims walk today. The 2023-2024 redevelopment as part of the wider Ayodhya beautification — coinciding with the new Ram Mandir — built modern aarti pavilions, riverside lighting, public infrastructure for the Deep Utsav, and ghat-to-temple roadways.

వాస్తుశిల్పం

The Saryu Ghat extends over 1.5 km along the river-front. The principal aarti-station — Ram Ki Paidi — is at the central bend with stone-paved steps, brass lamp-pillars, and small subsidiary shrines (Saryu Devi, Hanuman, and small Ram-Sita murtis). The Naya Ghat to the south and the Guptar Ghat to the north extend the river-front. The newly-built aarti pavilion (2023) has tiered seating for visitors and improved sightlines for the evening aarti.

ఆచారాలు & పూజలు

The day at Saryu Ghat begins with pilgrim baths from before sunrise. By mid-morning the ghat is busy with tarpan and pind-daan; small pandits sit at marked stations to assist pilgrims with these rites (licensed and with set rates). The evening Saryu Aarti begins at sunset — typically around 6:30 PM in summer, 5:45 PM in winter — with great brass lamps, conch, bell, and recitation of the Saryu Ashtakam. The aarti runs for about 30 minutes; pilgrims float small leaf-cups with diyas into the river as it begins.

The traditional sequence in Ayodhya is: morning Saryu snan, Hanuman Garhi darshan, Ram Janmabhoomi, Kanak Bhawan, Sita Ki Rasoi, and return to Saryu Ghat for the evening aarti. The full circuit takes a comfortable 2-3 days.

Practical guidance to help you plan your pilgrimage

Pilgrim Guidance

How to reach

The principal Ram Ki Paidi section is in central Ayodhya, 3 km from the Janmabhoomi area. Cycle-rickshaws and e-rickshaws drop pilgrims at the steps. Ayodhya Dham railway station is 4 km; AYJ airport is 7 km.

Preparation

Carry easily-changeable clothes for the bath and a separate kit-bag for wet clothes. Do not use soap or shampoo in the river. Steps can be slippery — wear shoes with grip. For pind-daan and tarpan, work with a licensed Panda; rates are set and we can arrange.

Best time to visit

Sunrise bath and sunset aarti are the two most spiritually charged moments daily. Deep Utsav on Choti Diwali (Kartik) is the supreme annual event. Akshaya Navami in Kartik (inner-parikrama day), Ram Navami (March-April), and Kartik Purnima see large pilgrim flows. Avoid the monsoon (July-August) when the Saryu can flood and ghat steps may be partially submerged.
