Sonprayag sits at 1,829 metres in the Mandakini valley of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand — the confluence of the Mandakini (flowing down from Kedarnath) and the Basuki (a smaller stream from the higher ranges). The Garhwal panch-prayag tradition (the five sacred confluences of the Alaknanda system) does not include Sonprayag among the five canonical prayags, but local Mandakini tradition holds Sonprayag as a sacred confluence in its own right.

Sonprayag is the vehicle road-head for the Kedarnath yatra — large vehicles cannot proceed beyond this point. Pilgrims park here and take shared jeeps (5 km, 15 minutes) to Gaurikund where the trek begins. The town has hotels, dharma-shalas, an Uttarakhand Devasthanam Board registration counter, and the principal helicopter booking offices. For the Kedarnath pilgrim, Sonprayag is the last comfortable stop before the high-altitude push.

The Parvati-Shiva meeting

Local Garhwal tradition tells: Parvati, after years of tapas at Triyuginarayan (12 km from Sonprayag), finally received the boon of Shiva as her husband. Their first meeting after this boon — before the marriage at Triyuginarayan — happened at the Sonprayag confluence. The two rivers meeting here are held to symbolise this meeting; pilgrims bathe at the confluence to receive the grace of the auspicious meeting of devotee and divine.

Sonprayag is held to be a sacred meeting-point of devotion and grace — the place where Parvati's tapas was fulfilled in her first meeting with Shiva. The Mandakini and Basuki sangam is the visible symbol of this meeting; the snan here is held to be especially auspicious for those seeking right partner-blessings, marital harmony, and the strengthening of devotional bonds.

చరిత్ర

Sonprayag as a road-head and pilgrim staging point developed through the twentieth century with the building of the Garhwal motor roads. The 2013 Kedarnath floods devastated the town; rebuilding from 2014 onwards has transformed Sonprayag into a modern pilgrim base. The Sonprayag Tourist Bureau and the Mandakini Bridge — both built post-2013 — are central to the present infrastructure.

వాస్తుశిల్పం

Sonprayag is a small mountain town built along the Mandakini and the highway. The sangam itself is a stone-paved area where the two rivers meet; the surrounding banks are well-maintained for pilgrim visits. A small Shiva-Parvati shrine sits above the sangam. The town has 3-5 hotels of moderate quality, dharma-shalas, and small shops for pilgrim supplies.

ఆచారాలు & పూజలు

Most pilgrims do not stop at Sonprayag for extended worship — the town's role is as a staging point. The traditional sequence: arrive at Sonprayag in the evening from Rudraprayag/Rishikesh, register at the Devasthanam counter, overnight stay, pre-dawn jeep to Gaurikund, trek/heli to Kedarnath. A short bath at the sangam before departure is the common pilgrim practice.

Pilgrim Guidance

How to reach

Sonprayag is 75 km from Rudraprayag and 215 km from Rishikesh, on the main Kedarnath yatra highway. The road is paved throughout; the last stretch from Guptkashi (29 km, 1 hour) has narrow sections. Helicopter pilgrims often skip Sonprayag and fly directly from Phata/Sersi (8-10 km from Sonprayag).

Preparation

Sonprayag is at 1,829m — comfortable for most pilgrims. Most basic facilities are available; do not expect luxury. Carry cash; ATMs are limited. Mobile networks work at moderate strength. For the Devasthanam registration, carry photo ID for every group member.

Best time to visit

The Kedarnath yatra season (May to November). Settled weather May-June, mid-September to October. Sonprayag itself is accessible year-round, but with Kedarnath closed in winter the town is much quieter.
