Day 1 begins at Delhi airport. You take the morning flight to Bhubaneswar — we book the seat at the time of confirmation, IndiGo or Air India direct, around 2 hours 15 minutes in the air. At Bhubaneswar airport our sedan and Hindi-speaking driver are waiting; from there it is a 60 km drive south along the coastal road into Puri, a little over an hour with one stop for chai. We check into the 4-star beach-facing hotel by early afternoon — your room opens to the Bay of Bengal, the waves audible from the balcony. Lunch at the hotel (Odia thali — dal, bhaja, rice, machha jhola if you eat fish, mahaprasad-style if not), a short rest, and by sandhya we walk to Jagannath Mandir for the Sandhya Dhupa darshan. Our coordinator meets you at the Singhadwara approach; the evening line is shorter than the morning rush, and you bow at the murtis of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra in the inner sanctum. Back at the hotel for dinner.

The heart of the yatra. Early breakfast at the hotel, then walk to Jagannath Mandir for the Mangala Alati morning darshan — our coordinator meets you again at the Singhadwara approach, and the morning line is more measured than the temple rush hour. The darshan of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra on the Ratnavedi, the parikrama of the inner courtyard, the prasad. After the darshan we go to Ananda Bazaar — the open-air market inside the temple complex where Mahaprasad is served on sal-leaf platters. The 56-bhoga is cooked in 752 earthen pots, stacked nine high over wood fires inside the Anand Bhoga Mandap; the top pot cooks first because the fire below it has Bhagavan's blessing. The platter has dalma, rice, several bhaja, and pithas; we eat sitting on the stone floor of the bazaar, the way pilgrims have eaten here for centuries.</p><p>After Mahaprasad, a short rest at the hotel through the heat of the day. Mid-afternoon we drive to Loknath — the Shiva linga submerged in a tank inside the temple, where Sri Ram is held to have installed the linga during his vanvasa search for Sita Mata. From Loknath to Gundicha — the garden temple, 3 km north of Jagannath, the destination of the Rath Yatra where Bhagavan visits for nine days each Ashadha. The temple is white, quiet, surrounded by old shade trees. From Gundicha to Tota Gopinath — the small temple where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is held to have merged into the murti of Gopinath at the end of his earthly life. Evening back at Jagannath for the Sandhya Aarti, then walk to the hotel for dinner.

After breakfast we drive 35 km up the Puri-Konark Marine Drive — the coastal road runs with the Bay of Bengal on your right, casuarina groves on your left, fishing villages at the bends. We reach Konark by 9:30 AM, when the morning light strikes the temple eastward and the carving reads cleanest. The 13th-century Sun Temple of Narasimhadeva is laid out as the chariot of Surya — twelve pairs of wheels for the twelve months, seven horses pulling for the seven days of the week, the bhoga mandapa and jagamohana surviving, the main sikhara fell progressively between the 16th and 19th centuries, and the jagamohana was sealed with sand in 1903. We walk the temple slowly with the ASI plaques — the Surya panels at the three cardinal faces (morning, noon, evening), the wheels with their carved spokes that work as sundials, the friezes of musicians and dancers and the Kalinga king with his elephants.</p><p>From Konark we drive 7 km to Ramachandi — the small Shakti temple where the Chandrabhaga river meets the sea, the kuladevi of the Konark builders. Then a short stop at Chandrabhaga Beach itself — the puranic site where Samba, the son of Krishna, is held to have been cured of leprosy by twelve days of Surya worship at the river-mouth. We return to Puri by afternoon for lunch on your own (we recommend the Odia thali places near the temple), rest, and walk down to Swargadwar Beach by 5:30 PM for the sunset over the Bay of Bengal — the same sun the Konark temple was raised to honour, going down behind the western land.

After breakfast we leave Puri at 7:30 AM and drive south through the coastal villages to Satapada — the eastern mouth of Chilika Lake, where the brackish lagoon meets the Bay of Bengal through a narrow channel. The drive is 50 km, 1.5 hours through paddy fields and coconut groves. At the Satapada jetty our boat operator is waiting — we have worked with him for several seasons. The motor-boat takes us out into the wide water; the Irrawaddy dolphins surface in the brackish zone where the salt water meets the sweet, and the boatman cuts the engine and drifts so the dolphins approach on their own. They come in twos and threes, breach, breathe, and slip under. The dolphin run lasts an hour or so, then the boat takes us deeper into the lake to Kalijai — the small island temple of Goddess Kalijai, the kuladevi of the Chilika fisherfolk, whose Odia ballad ("Boita Bandana Geetika") every village child knows.</p><p>The temple is reached by a stone stair from the boat-jetty; the murti is small, dark, in a low chamber; the priests are old fisherfolk. We have darshan, offer a coconut, sit a while on the rocks looking out at the lake. Lunch at a Satapada local place — fresh Chilika fish if you eat it, vegetable thali otherwise. Boat back to the jetty, sedan back to Puri by evening — about 6:00 PM at the hotel. Dinner and rest; tomorrow is the early departure for Bhubaneswar.

The closing day. After breakfast we check out of the Puri hotel by 8:30 AM and drive north 65 km to Bhubaneswar — the old Kalinga capital, the city the puranas call Ekamra Kshetra, the seat of Lingaraj. The drive is 1.5 hours through the coastal plains. We reach the Lingaraj precinct by mid-morning; the 11th-century temple raised by the Soma-vamshi kings is one of the most complete Kalinga-style temples surviving, its 180-foot sikhara visible from miles. The Lingaraj here is a Harihara — half Vishnu, half Shiva — and the abhisheka is offered with the water of the Bindusagar tank just outside the temple, which the puranas hold to contain a drop of every sacred tirtha of Bharatavarsha. Non-Hindus enter only as far as the platform overlooking the temple; Hindu pilgrims may enter the garbhagriha for the linga-darshan. We have darshan, offer the bel-patra, sit in the courtyard for the brief silence that this city's old temples carry, and walk out by noon.</p><p>From Lingaraj a short drive to Bhubaneswar airport — 5 km, 20 minutes. We hand you over at the departure gate for the afternoon flight back to Delhi. The four dhams of the eastern sea — Jagannath at Puri, Surya at Konark, Kalijai at Chilika, Lingaraj at Bhubaneswar — done in five days. The Bay of Bengal touched. The Mahaprasad eaten. The dhwaja of Jagannath, the wheels of Konark, the dolphins of Chilika, the Harihara of Lingaraj — all four images carried home.
