Day 1 begins at the Kolkata platform. You board the evening train from Howrah or Shalimar to Puri — we book the seat at the time of confirmation, 3AC or sleeper as you choose. The Howrah-Puri Express (12837) leaves Howrah around 10:30 PM and is the standard pilgrim train; the Sri Jagannath Express (18409) now runs out of Shalimar at 6:55 PM. The Shatabdi runs as a faster day option but our package uses the overnight to save a hotel night. The train runs through the night down the coastal corridor — Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Khurda Road — and reaches Puri between 4:35 and 7:30 AM on Day 2 morning, depending on which of the two you are booked on. Light packing recommended; carry your own water and a chai-snack for the platform.

The train pulls into Puri in the early morning and the sea-wind hits you the moment you step off. Our driver is waiting; a 10-minute drive to the beach-facing 3-star hotel, check-in (early check-in arranged on confirmation), breakfast at the hotel, and a short rest. Morning free for the beach — Puri's Golden Beach is at your hotel's doorstep; the sand is wide, the waves are strong, the local fishermen are pulling in their catamarans by 9:00 AM. A walk, a coffee, a stretch after the train. Afternoon free; lunch on your own (we will tell you where the good Odiya thali places are).</p><p>Evening, we walk down the Bada Danda — the grand road that runs from the Jagannath Mandir to Gundicha. Our panda contact meets us at the Singhadwar, the lion gate; he is the one we have worked with for two seasons and he knows the queue rhythm. The Sandhya darshan is the evening arati — the ratna-simhasana, the three murtis carved from neem-wood (the daru), Sri Jagannath dark and round-eyed, Subhadra Mata smaller between her brothers, Balabhadra fair and broad. The bhog-arati, the conch, the deep tinkle of the bells, the priests in their crimson robes. Back to the hotel by 9:00 PM for dinner.

The heart of the yatra. Early breakfast at the hotel, then back to the Jagannath Mandir for the Sahana Mela — the open morning darshan of the three deities on the ratna-simhasana that follows the Mangala Alati and Abakasha nitis, a sweeter slot than the evening rush. Our panda contact meets you at the Singhadwar, walks you through the queue, and helps with the Mahaprasad arrangement at Ananda Bazaar — the world's largest open-air temple kitchen, where the prasad is cooked in earthen pots stacked seven high over wood-fire and is held to never spoil. The token, the sitting place on the sal-leaf, the rice and dal and seven sabzis served by the temple sevayats. You sit on the floor and eat with your hand; this is the temple way.</p><p>After Mahaprasad, the inner-circle Puri shrines. Loknath Mandir — the Shiva linga immersed in a perennial water pool inside the inner garbhagriha, held to have been installed by Sri Rama himself; the abhishek-jal pours over the linga at all times. Gundicha Mandir — the garden-temple where Sri Jagannath, Subhadra Mata, and Balabhadra stay for nine days during Rath Yatra; the brick-and-stone enclosure is empty most of the year but the bhava is the bhava of Sri Krishna's aunt's home. Tota Gopinath — the small temple in the Tota Gopinath sahi where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's final prana is held to have entered the murti of Gopinath. The temple is quiet, leafy, and the murti is striking — Gopinath seated, the flute at his lips. Evening free for the beach. Dinner at the hotel.

The Sun Temple morning. After breakfast we drive east from Puri along the Marine Drive — the casuarina belt on the left, the Bay of Bengal on the right, palm groves between. The road is a clean hour to Konark. The Sun Temple stands roofless now (the main shikhara fell progressively between the 16th and 19th centuries, and the jagamohana was sealed with sand in 1903) but the chariot is intact and the proportion is breathtaking — twenty-four wheels around the plinth, each 10 feet across, several of them carved to work as sundials; seven horses straining at the yoke to pull Surya across the sky; the bhoga-mandapa (offering hall), the nata-mandira (dance hall), the jagamohana (audience hall) all in line. The stone musicians and dancers ring the plinth; the erotic sculptures of the upper bands (now read as fertility-iconography, not ornament) are the famous ones tourist guides talk about. Our guide walks you through the iconography for 90 minutes — not the breathless tour-bus narration, but the slow Puranic reading.</p><p>Back to Puri by lunch (lunch on your own at the hotel or a thali place we suggest). Late afternoon, the drive to Chandrabhaga Beach — 3 km north of Konark, quieter than Puri's Golden Beach, where the Chandrabhaga river meets the sea. The Surya-snan at sunset is a ritual older than the temple itself; pilgrims still come for the chhath-style worship in autumn. A short walk on the sand, the sun going down on the Bay, and back to the hotel. Next morning Day 4 (or same-day evening, depending on train schedule): a slow walk on Puri's Golden Beach at sunrise, breakfast at the hotel, checkout, and the return train to Kolkata from Puri station.
