Gundicha Temple sits in a quiet garden compound on the Bada Danda (the broad processional avenue) at the northern end of central Puri, 3 km from the great Shri Jagannath Mandir. The temple is intimately tied to the Rath Yatra — every Ashadha, Bhagavan Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra travel from the Shri Mandir on their enormous wooden chariots to Gundicha and stay for nine days. The journey is called the Rath Yatra; the destination is Gundicha; the return journey (nine days later) is called the Bahuda Yatra, and Niladri Bije is the deities' ceremonial re-entry into the Shri Mandir at its end.
Gundicha is held by tradition to be the residence of Jagannath's aunt — his maternal-aunt named Gundicha — and the Rath Yatra is the divine family's visit to her home. The bhav of this is the bhav of homecoming, of relatives, of the sweet visiting-relationships that hold Vaishnava families together. The garden compound is calmer and quieter than the great Shri Mandir; pilgrims often find Gundicha the most peaceful Jagannath-darshan of their Puri yatra.
The Adapa Mandap
Within the Gundicha compound is the Adapa Mandap — the hall where the deities reside during the nine-day stay. The Adapa Mandap is a separate sanctum from the temple's permanent inner shrine; for the rest of the year (when the deities are at the Shri Mandir), the Adapa Mandap is bare. Only during the nine days of the Rath Yatra (called Anasara-Aparenta) does the Mandap hold the principal deities. Pilgrims who time their Puri yatra to coincide with the Rath Yatra get to see Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra at both the Shri Mandir (briefly before the yatra) and at Gundicha (during the nine-day stay).

Gundicha is held in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition (particularly the Mahaprabhu Chaitanya tradition) to be a site of deep bhakti — Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya himself spent many of his Puri-years closely tied to the Gundicha-Yatra. Tradition holds that on the morning of the Rath Yatra, Chaitanya helped clean the Gundicha temple in preparation for Bhagavan's arrival — the act of Gundicha-Maracha (the great cleaning) is still observed annually by Gaudiya devotees as a re-enactment.
చరిత్ర
The Gundicha Temple has been a part of the Puri tradition since the founding era of the Shri Mandir (12th-13th century). The garden-compound layout is unusual for Kalinga temples and reflects the residential character — it is meant to be a home, not a primary place of worship. The Eastern Ganga and Gajapati patrons of the Shri Mandir also patronised Gundicha through the centuries; modern administration is shared between the Jagannath Mandir Trust and the local Puri authorities.
వాస్తుశిల్పం
Gundicha is a single-sanctum stone temple in Kalinga style — modest Vimana, low Jagamohan, a small Bhog Mandap, and the principal Adapa Mandap (the hall where the deities stay). The garden-compound around the temple is the largest temple garden in Puri; mango, palm, and flowering trees give it a residential rather than monumental feel.
ఆచారాలు & పూజలు
For 11 months of the year, Gundicha is open for visitors but the principal sanctum is bare (the deities are at Shri Mandir). The temple does run small daily rituals — sweeping, washing, occasional readings — to keep the building ready. The principal worship happens during the nine-day Rath Yatra period. Pilgrims visiting Puri outside the Rath Yatra can do Gundicha as a peaceful contemplative site; during the yatra it is the focus of the entire city.
The traditional sequence on a Rath Yatra visit: Day 1, follow the chariot procession from Shri Mandir to Gundicha; Days 2-8, daily darshan at Gundicha; Day 9 (Bahuda Yatra), follow the chariot return to Shri Mandir, culminating in Niladri Bije — the deities' re-entry. The full nine-day stay is the supreme Vaishnava experience.

Practical guidance to help you plan your pilgrimage
| Pilgrim Guidance | How to reachGundicha is in central Puri, 3 km north of Shri Mandir on the Bada Danda. Cycle-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws drop pilgrims at the gate. During the Rath Yatra the Bada Danda is closed to vehicles; pilgrims walk the route. PreparationModest dress; the Shri Mandir restrictions (Hindus only for the inner sanctum) generally apply at Gundicha as well, though outside the Rath Yatra the restrictions are less strictly enforced. Phones permitted in the outer garden; not in the sanctum. Best time to visitThe Rath Yatra (Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, June-July) is the supreme time. October to February is the most pleasant weather outside the Yatra. The Bahuda Yatra day (return of the chariots) is also very crowded. |
