The tradition

What is the Char Dham Yatra?

The Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the high-Himalayan pilgrimage to the four sacred dhams of the Garhwal range. The shrines open on Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and close around Diwali for the winter. Tradition places the yatra in a clockwise order — Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — moving from rivers of mercy to the seat of moksha. Adi Shankaracharya is remembered for reviving the worship at Badrinath and Kedarnath in the 8th century, and the four shrines have been understood as a single sacred circuit ever since. (Note: Adi Shankaracharya also established a separate pan-India Char Dham — Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram, Dwarka — covered on our Adi Char Dham page.)

The Four Dhams — Altitude, Access & the 2026 Season

The Char Dham opened for 2026 on 19 April, Akshaya Tritiya — Yamunotri and Gangotri first, then Kedarnath on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April. The kapat close for winter around Diwali and Bhai Dooj (early-to-mid November 2026); the exact closing dates are declared by the temple committees around Vijayadashami, so reconfirm before a late-season yatra.

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim. It is free, on the Uttarakhand government portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — the only official site. You receive a QR code that is verified at checkpoints on the yatra routes; travel without it and you can be turned back.

Altitude and health: Kedarnath stands at 3,583 m and Badrinath at 3,300 m — high enough that the air is noticeably thin. Walk slowly, sleep a night at Guptkashi or Sonprayag before the Kedarnath trek, carry your regular medicines, and consult your doctor before travelling if you have a heart or breathing condition. Medical relief posts line the Kedarnath trail.

The traditional order runs west to east — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — and every Satmarg itinerary follows it.

How to reach

The Route — Haridwar to Badrinath in 9–12 Days

The yatra begins at Haridwar or Rishikesh. From Delhi that is 4–6 hours by rail or road; Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun) is about 35 km from Rishikesh. Beyond Rishikesh the circuit runs entirely on mountain roads — early starts, six-to-eight-hour driving days, and weather that decides the schedule.

Helicopter to Kedarnath: shuttle flights from Phata, Sirsi and Guptkashi are booked only on heliyatra.irctc.co.in — the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. There are no authorised agents for these tickets; websites, social-media pages or individuals selling Kedarnath heli seats elsewhere are selling fraud. Your Uttarakhand yatra registration must be complete before you can book.

Allow 9–12 days by road for all four dhams. We build buffer days into every itinerary — in the Himalaya, the mountain sets the pace.

A morning at Kedarnath

Before the sun touches the temple

At 3,583 metres, the morning air is thin and clear. Pilgrims wake in their guesthouses while it is still dark and walk the short stone path to the temple, blankets wrapped over their woollens. The Bhairavnath aarti has just ended; the priests are preparing for the Maha Abhishek.

By the time the first light touches the snow above the temple, the queue has formed. Inside, the Jyotirlinga of Kedareshwar is offered Gangajal, ghee, and bilva patra. The mantra of Om Namah Shivaya rises softly from the pilgrims behind. Outside, the prayer flags catch the first wind from Mahapanth.

This is the heart of the Char Dham — not the helicopter, not the helipad, not the trek. It is the moment when the cold and the climb fall away, and the pilgrim stands before the linga that has held this valley for as long as Hindus have remembered it.

Questions asked often

Char Dham Yatra — Frequently Asked

When does the Char Dham yatra open in 2026?

The kapat of each dham opens on or around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May. Exact dates are announced by the temple committees each year. The yatra typically runs until late October or early November, closing around Diwali and Bhai Dooj.

Is Uttarakhand Char Dham registration mandatory?

Yes. Every pilgrim must complete the Government of Uttarakhand online registration before darshan at any of the four dhams. We handle this registration for every pilgrim in your booked group as part of the package.

Can elderly pilgrims do the Char Dham?

Yes, but altitude is real — three of the four dhams sit above 3,000 metres. We recommend the helicopter package for pilgrims over 65 or with cardiac, respiratory, or blood pressure conditions, and a medical fitness check before travel. Pony, palki (palanquin), and porter services are available at Yamunotri and Kedarnath for those who cannot trek the final stretch.

What is the difference between Char Dham and Adi Char Dham?

The Char Dham today most commonly refers to the Uttarakhand pilgrimage — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — covered on this page. Adi Shankaracharya also established a separate pan-India Char Dham in the 8th century — Badrinath, Jagannath Puri, Rameshwaram, and Dwarka — covered on our Adi Char Dham page.

When should I avoid the yatra?

Avoid July and August — the Garhwal monsoon brings heavy rain, landslides, and frequent road closures. The settled weather windows are May to mid-June and mid-September to October. The kapat-opening days and Diwali week are spiritually charged but very crowded.

Can the helicopter packages be cancelled if weather is bad?

Yes — helicopter operations depend entirely on visibility and weather at each helipad. If a flight is grounded, operators usually offer rebooking on the next available slot or a refund of the unflown leg. We help coordinate with the operator and adjust the rest of your itinerary as needed.

What clothing and supplies should I carry?

Warm woollens (temperatures fall below 5°C even in summer), rain protection, sturdy walking shoes, basic medicines including any altitude-related prescriptions from your doctor, a torch, sunscreen, dark glasses, and personal toiletries. ATM and mobile network coverage is unreliable above Barkot and Joshimath — carry sufficient cash.

Do you arrange pind-daan or tarpan at Gangotri or Badrinath?

Yes — we can arrange a qualified pandit at Gangotri or at Brahma Kapal in Badrinath for tarpan, pinda-daan, and ancestor rites. Mention this at the time of enquiry so we can include the muhurat and the priest's dakshina in the itinerary.

How do I complete the Uttarakhand yatra registration?

Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — the only official portal, run by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. Enter your ID details, travel dates and the dhams you will visit; you receive a QR code that is checked at yatra checkpoints. Registration for the 2026 season opened on 6 March 2026. Offline counters exist at Haridwar and Rishikesh, but registering online before you travel is far safer. We walk every guest through it before departure.

Which months are best for the Char Dham?

May–June and September–October. July and August are monsoon months — landslides and road blocks on the Kedarnath and Badrinath highways are a real risk, and we advise against travelling then. The 2026 season runs from 19 April to early-to-mid November, with the kapat closing around Diwali and Bhai Dooj.

How do I book the Kedarnath helicopter safely?

Only on heliyatra.irctc.co.in, the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. Bookings open in phases through the season and sell out within hours. There are no authorised agents — fake websites and social-media pages sell fraudulent Kedarnath heli tickets every year, so treat any other seller as a scam. Your Uttarakhand yatra registration must be completed first; the portal requires it.

Can I start planning for the 2027 season now?

Yes — and for May–June travel you should. Kedarnath's opening date is traditionally declared on Mahashivratri and Badrinath's around Basant Panchami, with Yamunotri and Gangotri opening on Akshaya Tritiya (late April 2027); registration usually opens in March. Hotels and vehicles on the route sell out earliest for the opening weeks. Tell us your window on WhatsApp and we hold the plan, with a fixed written quote once dates are declared.

How much does the Char Dham Yatra package cost in 2026?

Market rates for the 2026 season: shared group departures by road run roughly ₹19,000–25,000 per person; private family packages with an AC vehicle and better hotels typically ₹28,000–45,000 per person; the full helicopter Char Dham runs about ₹1.6–2.35 lakh per person. The exact figure depends on your travel month, group size, and hotel category — tell us your plan on WhatsApp and we send a fixed written quote with everything itemised. No hidden charges on the mountain.

How many days are needed for the Char Dham Yatra?

By road, 9–12 days from Haridwar covering all four dhams at the traditional pace. The helicopter circuit compresses it to 5–6 days from Dehradun. If you have less time, the Do Dham (Kedarnath and Badrinath) takes 6–7 days by road.

How do I do the Char Dham Yatra from Delhi?

Reach Haridwar or Rishikesh first — 4–6 hours from Delhi by train or road, or fly to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun). Our packages begin at Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun; add one travel day on each side of the itinerary from Delhi. We can also arrange your Delhi–Haridwar taxi as part of the package.

Should I choose a group departure or a private vehicle?

Group departures share a bus or tempo traveller on fixed dates — the most economical way, and good company for solo pilgrims and couples. A private AC vehicle costs more but sets its own pace: extra rest halts for elders, longer darshan time, and flexible dates. Families with elderly pilgrims almost always prefer private.

Is there an IRCTC or train-based Char Dham option?

IRCTC runs its own bundled tours, and the Kedarnath helicopter shuttle is booked only on the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal. Most pilgrims simply take a train to Haridwar and start the road circuit from there — share your train arrival and we plan the pickup and itinerary around it.
