The pan-India Char Dham

What is the Adi Char Dham?

The original Char Dham was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century — four sacred dhams placed at the four cardinal directions of Bharat to bind the country together in dharma. Badrinath is the northern dham, Jagannath Puri the eastern, Rameshwaram the southern, and Dwarka the western. Each is a seat of Vishnu in a distinct form. To complete all four is to traverse Bharat itself as a pilgrim and to fulfill the supreme Vaishnava aspiration. The Chota Char Dham of Uttarakhand (which most pilgrims today mean by 'Char Dham') is a different, later pilgrimage in the Himalayas. The Adi Char Dham takes 15 to 20 days at a comfortable pace with flights between regions.

Know before you go

The Four Dhams of Adi Shankaracharya

These are the four dhams the Acharya bound into one pilgrimage in the 8th century — one on each edge of the land, one for each direction. This is the pan-India Char Dham of the shastras, distinct from Uttarakhand's Himalayan circuit (the Chota Char Dham).

DwarkaKrishna as DwarkadhishGujaratWest

Three of the four are open all year. Badrinath alone is seasonal — open roughly late April to mid-November (in 2026, from 23 April to around 13 November) and snow-bound in winter. Whatever order you choose, the Badrinath leg must fall inside its season, and Uttarakhand's mandatory free yatra registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in applies to it.

Each dham keeps its own grammar: at Rameswaram pilgrims bathe in the 22 theerthams before darshan; at Puri the Lord is seen with his brother and sister; at Dwarka the flag over the shikhara is changed several times a day. We brief you before each one.

How to plan

Planning the Circuit — One Journey or Several

The four corners span the whole country — roughly 6,000 km if driven. Realistically, pilgrims complete the Adi Char Dham one of two ways: one leg at a time over separate trips, or a single 12–15 day circuit connected by flights. Both are honoured; the merit is in completing the four.

DhamNearest airportNearest railheadPlanning note
PuriBhubaneswar (BBI), ~60 kmPuriWell connected; Konark is an easy add-on
RameswaramMadurai (IXM), ~170 kmRameswaram, across the Pamban bridgeCombine with Madurai Meenakshi
DwarkaJamnagar (JGA), ~130 km; Rajkot (RAJ)Dwarka (DWK)Combine with Somnath and Nageshwar
BadrinathDehradun (DED), then ~315 km by roadRail ends at RishikeshSeasonal; mountain roads need 4–5 days round trip

A workable single-circuit shape: fly into Bhubaneswar for Puri, south to Madurai for Rameswaram, across to Gujarat for Dwarka, then finish north — Delhi, Haridwar, and the road to Badrinath, which alone needs four to five days with its driving legs and buffer for weather.

Questions asked often

Adi Char Dham Yatra — Frequently Asked

What's the difference between Adi Char Dham and Chota Char Dham?

The Adi Char Dham (eighth-century, Adi Shankaracharya) is pan-India — Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram, Dwarka. The Chota Char Dham (Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath) is a regional Himalayan pilgrimage. Most pilgrims today say 'Char Dham' meaning the Chota version. Both are revered.

What's the right sequence?

Tradition allows any sequence, but the most common modern itinerary is clockwise starting from the north: Badrinath → Puri → Rameshwaram → Dwarka. This works geographically with flights and is what most groups follow.

When can I do this yatra?

Badrinath is open only May to November (winter kapat closed). The other three are year-round. October-November or May-June are the best windows — Badrinath open, weather pleasant elsewhere. Avoid monsoon if doing Badrinath.

What's the budget per person?

For 15-20 days with flights and AC ground transport: ₹1.5-3 lakhs per person depending on accommodation tier (3-star vs 4-star vs premium). Group bookings reduce per-head cost. Flights are the largest line item.

Can elderly pilgrims do this?

Yes, with care. Badrinath at 3,133m requires medical fitness; the other three are at sea-level coastal cities. We plan rest days between regions and use flights to minimise long ground travel. Single-region yatras (East+West only, or North+South only) are also gentle alternatives.

Should I add the Char Dham of Adi Shankara's four mathas?

Adi Shankara also established four mathas — Jyotirmath (Joshimath, north), Govardhan (Puri, east), Sringeri (Karnataka, south), and Sharada (Dwarka, west). These coincide closely with the Char Dham; visits to the matha shankaracharya can be added at each dham if your itinerary permits.

Can the Adi Char Dham be done in one trip?

Yes, with flights — plan 12 to 15 days for all four corners, of which Badrinath alone takes four to five (mountain roads from Rishikesh, plus weather buffer). By road and rail alone the circuit stretches well past three weeks. Most families split it into two to four trips over a year or more; tradition honours both approaches — the merit is in completing the four dhams, not in doing them at once.

Is Badrinath open all year like the other three?

No. Puri, Dwarka and Rameswaram receive pilgrims through the year, but Badrinath opens only from late April to mid-November — in 2026, from 23 April to around 13 November — and is snow-bound in winter. Plan the northern leg inside that window, avoid the July–August monsoon on the mountain roads, and complete Uttarakhand's mandatory free registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before travelling.

What can we add around each dham?

Puri pairs naturally with the Konark Sun Temple; Rameswaram with Madurai Meenakshi and Dhanushkodi; Dwarka with Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga and Somnath — two Jyotirlingas in one Gujarat leg; and Badrinath with Mana village, or the full Uttarakhand Char Dham if you have the days. Tell us which extensions matter to you and we build them into the leg.

How does booking work across four states?

One enquiry covers it. Tell us on WhatsApp which legs you want and your window; we plan each leg — flights guidance, hotels, cabs, darshan sequence — and send a single fixed written quote with no hidden charges. You can confirm all legs together or book them one at a time as your dates firm up.
