Jagannath Puri
Jagannath Puri is the eastern dham of Adi Shankaracharya's pan-India Char Dham, on the Bay of Bengal coast of Odisha. The seat of Bhagavan Jagannath — Vishnu in his form as Lord of the Universe — worshipped together with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra in the great Shri Mandir of Puri. Host of the world-famous Rath Yatra every Ashadha, when the deities travel through the streets of Puri on their massive wooden chariots.
PuriDashashwamedh Ghat
The spiritual centrepiece of Varanasi's ghats and one of the five sacred panchatirtha ghats of Kashi. Tradition holds that Brahma himself performed ten Ashwamedha yajnas here, and the evening Ganga Aarti continues a nightly devotional offering to the river goddess.
VaranasiManikarnika Ghat
Manikarnika is the <em>Mahashamshan</em> of Kashi — the great cremation ground. Hindu tradition holds that Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ear of every soul cremated here, and that the ground itself grants moksha. It is counted among the five <em>panchatirtha</em> ghats of Kashi.
VaranasiAkshay Vat
Akshay Vat — "the imperishable banyan" — is the ancient sacred tree at the Patalpuri Mandir inside Allahabad Fort. Held by Hindu tradition to be one of the few trees that survives the cosmic dissolution (pralaya). Famous from the seventh-century testimony of the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang who saw it on his 643 CE visit.
PrayagrajBrahma Kapal
Brahma Kapal is the riverside ghat just behind the Badrinath temple where pinda-daan and tarpan for departed ancestors is performed. Tradition holds that ancestor-rites at Brahma Kapal release ancestors from pitru-rina (the debt to ancestors), a benefit considered unavailable at any other tirtha in Bharat.
ChamoliVasudhara Falls
Vasudhara is a sacred Himalayan waterfall about 6 km beyond Mana village, the last Indian habitation before Tibet, and about 9 km from Badrinath Dham. The spring falls some 400 feet down a sheer rock face at roughly 3,658 m altitude. A long-held tradition of Badrinath says the waters of Vasudhara turn away from one whose heart is heavy with sin, so that even the spray will not touch them — only the inwardly clean receive the cool blessing of this stream.
