The tradition

The Vidhi of Asthi Visarjan

The shastras hold that when the asthi of the departed are given to the Ganga at Kashi, the soul's onward journey is eased in a way granted to few places. Families have carried the kalash to this river for as long as the city has stood.

The rite itself is brief and complete: sankalpa — the declaration of intent, naming your gotra and the departed; the kalash carried to the river and taken by boat to midstream, where visarjan is performed at spots long designated for it; then tarpan — water and til offered for the departed's peace. From meeting your pandit to stepping back on the ghat takes about an hour to an hour and a half, and no part of it is hurried.

Tradition prefers the immersion to follow soon after asthi sanchayan — the collection of the asthi, usually on the third or fourth day after cremation — and many families come within the first ten days, before the shraddha rites conclude. But the Ganga turns no one away: if time has passed, the rite is performed with the same vidhi and the same care. Many families also perform pind daan in the same visit, once the visarjan is complete — we arrange both together when asked.

From enquiry to yatra

How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us when you arrive

Many families come the same day, straight off a train or flight with the kalash. Tell us your arrival time on WhatsApp — even at short notice.

  2. 2

    Everything made ready

We confirm the pandit, the ghat, the boat, and one fixed written price. All samagri is arranged; you carry only the kalash.

  3. 3

    The visarjan

We receive you at the station, airport, or hotel and walk with you to the river. The pandit performs sankalpa, the midstream immersion, and tarpan at an unhurried pace.

  4. 4

    After the rite

Ganga snan if you wish, a quiet moment on the ghat, and drop-back. If the family intends pind daan, we arrange it in the same visit or on a later one.

Questions asked often

Questions families ask

Which ghat is used for Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi?

The immersion itself happens midstream, from a boat, at spots long designated for the rite. Families begin from the ghats most associated with the last rites — the stretch near Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghat — though a calmer ghat can be chosen if elderly family members are coming. Your pandit will recommend based on the day and the river.

When after the cremation should the visarjan be done?

Tradition prefers it soon after asthi sanchayan — the collection of the asthi on the third or fourth day — and ideally within the first ten days, before the shraddha rites conclude. If more time has passed, do not let that weigh on you: the rite is performed with the same vidhi whenever the family is able to come.

Does the whole family need to attend?

One family member — customarily the karta, usually the eldest son or a close male relative — performing the rite with his own hands fulfils the tradition. Others may accompany and stand with him, and many do. If who should perform it is uncertain in your family, ask us and the pandit will advise honestly.

What should we bring?

Only the asthi kalash, carried respectfully — a clean cloth wrapping is customary. Everything else — samagri, the boat, the pandit, til and flowers for tarpan — we arrange. White or light-coloured clothing is customary for the rite.

Should pind daan be performed as well?

Very often, yes — asthi visarjan settles the asthi in the Ganga, while pind daan is the shraddha offering for the soul's peace, and tradition treats them as companions. Many families do both in one visit; others return for pind daan during Pitru Paksha. We arrange either, and will never press you toward more than the occasion asks.

What does it cost?

The rite is modest by nature — a pandit, a boat, samagri, and our assistance. We send one fixed written quote on WhatsApp before you travel, and nothing is asked of you on the day, at the ghat, or on the boat.
