The ceremony

What Happens at the Ganga Aarti

Each evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat, young archakas in silk face the river with tiered brass lamps. To the sound of conch, bells, and the singing of Om Jai Gange Mata, they offer flame, incense, camphor, and chanwar to Ganga Maiya in slow, synchronised arcs. The ceremony lasts about forty-five minutes and has been performed daily, without exception, in rain and in fog.

The aarti begins at dusk, so the hour moves with the sun — roughly 6:45–7:00 PM in summer and closer to 6:00 PM in winter. Timings shift through the year and around festivals; we reconfirm the exact hour before your visit.

There are three ways to see it. The ghat steps are free and full of energy, but seats fill 60–90 minutes before the first flame. A boat moored midstream gives you the whole sweep of the ghat at once — the priests face the river, which means they face you. And for an occasion of your own, we arrange a private aarti performed on a boat for your family alone, a short ceremony with its own pandit, lamps, and flowers on the moving water.

    One written quote

We confirm the seating, the boatman, and one fixed written price on WhatsApp. Nothing is added on the day.

  3. 3

    The evening itself

Pickup from your hotel, a companion who walks you through the galis to your seat or boat, and no scrambling for space as the ghat fills.

  4. 4

    After the lamps

Offer a flower diya on the water, take a slow ride past the lit ghats, and we drop you back — or on to dinner if you wish.

Questions asked often

Questions pilgrims ask

What time does the Ganga Aarti start at Dashashwamedh Ghat?

It begins at dusk and runs about 45 minutes — roughly 6:45–7:00 PM in summer and closer to 6:00 PM in winter. The hour shifts with sunset through the year, so we reconfirm the exact timing before your visit and plan your pickup around it.

Where is the best place to watch — the ghat steps or a boat?

The steps put you an arm's length from the chanting and the crowd's energy, but they fill 60–90 minutes early and you see the ceremony from behind or beside. From a boat midstream you see all the platforms at once, exactly as the aarti is meant to face the river. Families with elders almost always prefer the boat — seated throughout, no pressing crowd.

How early should we arrive?

For a free spot on the steps, 60–90 minutes before the aarti. With a reserved boat seat or VIP platform seat through us, reaching 20–30 minutes ahead is enough — your place is held.

Is there a morning aarti as well?

Yes — Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat, held before sunrise every day: Vedic chanting, a gentle morning aarti to Ganga, and yoga on the platform as the sky lightens. It begins around 5:00 AM in summer and somewhat later in winter. It is quieter and more intimate than the evening ceremony, and pairs beautifully with a dawn boat ride.

Can we combine the aarti with Kashi Vishwanath darshan?

Yes, and this is the natural rhythm of an evening in Kashi — darshan at the temple in the late afternoon, then a short walk or ride to the ghat for the aarti. Or the reverse: aarti this evening, darshan at dawn. We sequence both so neither is rushed.

What does Ganga Aarti seating cost?

It depends on what you choose — assistance on the steps, a shared boat, a private boat, or a full private aarti ceremony. We send one fixed written quote on WhatsApp before you confirm, and nothing is asked on the day.
