What you'll see

The night the gods come down to bathe

Fifteen nights after Diwali, on Kartik Purnima, tradition holds that the devas themselves descend to the Ganga at Kashi to celebrate Shiva's victory over Tripurasura. The city receives them the only way it knows: every step of every ghat is laid with earthen lamps, lit by hand as dusk falls, until six kilometres of stone become a single line of flame. At Dashashwamedh the Maha Aarti is performed by 21 priests instead of 7. From a boat midstream you see all of it at once — and hear the conch and the bells carry across the water.

The complete guide

Dev Deepawali 2026 in Varanasi — everything a first-timer needs

Date, legend, the hour-by-hour of the night, how to reach and where to stay, what boats really cost, and where to stand if you stay on land. Written by a Varanasi team that does this every year.

What is Dev Deepawali, and how is it different from Diwali?

Dev Deepawali — literally the Diwali of the gods — falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon fifteen nights after Diwali. Diwali is celebrated across India in homes; Dev Deepawali is celebrated in one place, on one riverbank: the ghats of Kashi. Tradition holds that on this night the devas themselves come down to bathe in the Ganga, celebrating Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura — which is why the festival is also called Tripurotsav.

The city receives them the only way it knows. As dusk falls, volunteers lay and light earthen diyas on every step of every ghat — over ten lakh lamps in recent years — until six kilometres of stone from Assi to Adi Keshava become a single unbroken line of flame. At Dashashwamedh the evening Ganga Aarti is performed in its festival edition by 21 priests instead of 7. A snan in the Ganga on Kartik Purnima is held to carry the merit of a year of bathing, so the ghats fill with pilgrims from before dawn on the day itself.

The day, hour by hour

  • Before dawn — Kartik Purnima snan at the ghats; the calmest darshan at Kashi Vishwanath is early morning, before the festival crowd arrives.
  • ~2 PM — the administration stops vehicles at Rajghat and the other approaches. From here the ghats are on foot only. If you are not already within walking distance, you will not reach the river in time — reach Varanasi by noon at the latest — this is why our packages pick you up in the morning.
  • ~3:45 PM — walk from the hotel to the pickup ghat with our guide (the ghat is confirmed 48 hours before, chosen for that year's crowd routing).
  • ~4:30 PM — board the boat and cast off. Slow drift as the first lamps are lit on the far ghats.
  • 5:30–7:00 PM — the lighting hour. We hold midstream where the sweep is widest: Assi to Panchganga end to end, the reflection doubling it on the water.
  • ~7:00 PM — position in front of Dashashwamedh for the Maha Aarti; the conch and the bells carry across the water.
  • ~8:15 PM — back to the ghat, walk to the hotel. Lamps burn well past 9 PM if you want to walk the lit ghats after the main rush eases.

How to reach Varanasi — and why the 23rd

Every route works; the timing is what matters. Reach Varanasi by noon on the 24th at the latest — the roads to the ghats close in the early afternoon and the lanes stop moving. Arriving on the 23rd, as our Special does, is the relaxed way.

  • By air — Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (VNS), Babatpur, ~25 km / 60–75 min to the ghats. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chennai. Our cab meets you at arrivals.
  • By train — Varanasi Junction (BSB), Banaras (BSBS) and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Jn (DDU, 17 km). Vande Bharat and overnight trains from Delhi; direct trains from Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna. Book festival-week trains 60 days out.
  • By road — NH-19/NH-31: Lucknow ~5 h, Prayagraj ~3 h, Patna ~5 h, Gorakhpur ~4 h. Coming by car, park at the hotel on the 23rd and forget it until the 25th.

Where to stay for Dev Deepawali

Hotel prices in Varanasi rise two to three times for these dates, and river-facing rooms sell out by September. Two honest pieces of advice: stay within walking distance of the ghats — Godowlia, Bengali Tola, Assi, Chowk, Sonarpura — because you will be walking to the boat and back with no vehicles allowed near the river; and don't pay for the balcony view — you will be seeing the lit ghats from the boat, which is the only place they can be seen whole. Our packages pair a standard walking-distance room with the boat seat and pickups; a river-facing or single room is quoted on request.

Boats and what the night really costs

Every boat on the river is spoken for on Dev Deepawali, and the market prices this evening unlike any other. As a guide to what operators across Varanasi charge for 24 November 2026:

OptionTypical market rateNotes
Shared motor boat / double-decker₹2,500–4,500 per seatFixed decks, first to sell out
Large motor boat (30–40 seats)₹8,000–12,000 per seatSeated decks, steadier for elders
Private boat (up to ~20)₹50,000 and upwardYour own boarding time and pace

A seat on our double-decker Bajra boat — lit on board, with a water bottle and snacks — is ₹5,500 per person on its own. On festival night the boat, the hotel you walk from, the darshan and the pickups depend on each other, so most guests take them as one package with one written price — hotel + boat + pickups from ₹7,999 per person on twin sharing. Groups can take the whole double-decker Bajra boat, with rooms and transport for everyone.

If you stay on land: where to stand

Reach your spot by mid-afternoon; after that the lanes are slower than walking pace. The upper terraces near Dashashwamedh see the Maha Aarti but are the most crowded. Assi and the southern ghats are calmer, with a long view up the crescent. Namo Ghat has the most space and the easiest exit. Chet Singh and Lalita Ghats host the fire and laser shows. With elders, tell us and we arrange ghat-side seating and a companion who holds your place — but the honest answer is that from land you see one ghat, and from the river you see all of them.

Questions asked often

Before you book

When exactly is Dev Deepawali 2026?

Tuesday, 24 November 2026 — Kartik Purnima. The diyas are lit at dusk, around 5:30 PM, and the Maha Aarti at Dashashwamedh follows.

When do I need to reach Varanasi?

By noon on the 24th at the latest — vehicles are stopped at Rajghat and the other approaches around 2 PM, after which the ghats are reachable only on foot. Coming on the 23rd (our Special) is the relaxed way.

Can I see it without a boat?

You can stand on a ghat, but you'll see one ghat, in a very dense crowd. The whole crescent of lit ghats — the thing people travel for — is visible only from the river.

Is the boat safe for children and elders?

It is a large double-decker Bajra boat — steady on the water, with railings on both decks, life jackets aboard and a seat for every passenger. Boarding is by a fixed gangway. Elders who can manage ghat steps are fine; tell us in advance and we'll seat you on the lower deck, near the exit.

What if there is fog or rain?

Late November evenings are usually clear; fog comes after midnight. If the administration cancels boat movement, we refund the boat portion in full within 7 days.

What is the cancellation policy?

Dev Deepawali bookings are non-refundable once confirmed. We say that plainly rather than in the fine print: the rooms, the boat and the darshan passes for this one night are bought and paid for months ahead, on terms that allow no cancellation and no resale — so the money is already spent with the hotel and the boatman before you travel. Please be sure of your dates before you pay the advance. Medical emergencies and force majeure are covered separately in our refund policy.

Where does the boat leave from?

From a ghat we confirm 48 hours before, chosen for that year's crowd routing. Your guide walks you there from the hotel.

Can I book only the boat, or only a hotel?

Yes, the boat on its own: a seat on our double-decker Bajra boat, lit on board, with a water bottle and snacks, is ₹5,500 per person — you reach Assi Ghat by 3:30 PM yourself. Hotel-only or darshan-only, ask us; we may be able to help.

Is the Ganga Mahotsav included?

In the 3-day Special, yes — the evening of 23 Nov on the ghats. Festival Night guests can walk to it after check-in; it is free to attend.

How do I pay?

25% advance by UPI or payment link; the balance 30 days before arrival. You receive a written confirmation on WhatsApp and email.

How early should I book for Dev Deepawali 2026?

Six to ten weeks ahead is realistic; by early November the river and the walking-distance hotels are effectively full. August and September enquiries get the widest choice of rooms and boarding points.

What if the boat is sold out?

It genuinely happens, and sooner than you would expect — boat seats are limited and the counter on this page is real. Write to us as soon as your dates are firm. If the boat is full we tell you so honestly and, where possible, arrange a second boat or ghat-side seating with a companion.

Can we photograph the ghats from the boat?

Yes — the view from the water is the one the famous photographs are taken from, and the lamps give more light than you'd expect. On a shared boat a tripod is impractical; a group taking the whole boat can set up as they wish.

Do hotel prices really surge for Dev Deepawali?

Yes — river-facing rooms go for several times their normal tariff and are usually gone by September. Rooms a short walk inland stay reasonable; our packages use those, because you'll be seeing the river from the boat anyway.

What is the significance of Kartik Purnima?

The full moon of the month of Kartik marks Shiva's victory over Tripurasura — hence the festival's other name, Tripurotsav. A snan in the Ganga on this purnima is held to carry the merit of a year of bathing, which is why the ghats fill with pilgrims from before dawn.
