The tradition

What is the Ayodhya Yatra?

Ayodhya is the eternal city of Shri Ram on the banks of the Saryu, counted among the seven Mokshapuris of Sanatan Dharma. The yatra centres on the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple — consecrated on 22 January 2024 — and on Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Nageshwarnath, Treta Ke Thakur, the Saryu Ghat, and the inner Ayodhya Parikrama. A traditional Ayodhya yatra visits at least these seven darshan; pilgrims with more time also do Naimisharanya, Faizabad, and the smaller shrines along the Ram Path.

Ram Mandir Darshan — Timings, Aartis & the Pass System

Darshan of Ram Lalla at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir is free — the Trust runs no paid VIP line. The temple opens for darshan in the morning and pauses around midday for Bhog (roughly 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM), with evening darshan continuing until the Shayan Aarti. A free Sugam Darshan e-pass, booked only on the official portal online.srjbtkshetra.org, gives you a time-slot lane with a much shorter wait — slots open about 15 days ahead and fill within minutes. Carry Aadhaar (passport for foreign pilgrims); it is checked at entry.

AartiTimeNotes
Mangala Aarti4:00 AMPass required — book on the Trust portal well ahead.
Shringar Aarti6:30 AMPass required. Ram Lalla adorned for the day.
Bhog Aarti12:00 noonDarshan pauses midday; reopens around 2:00 PM.
Sandhya Aarti7:00 PMThe evening aarti.
Shayan Aarti~9:30 PMThe day's final aarti before the temple rests.

The customary order: pilgrims take darshan of Hanuman Garhi first — Hanuman ji is the guardian of Ayodhya, and his permission is sought before approaching Ram Lalla. The 76 steps up open from about 5:00 AM to 12:00 noon and again 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. In the evening, the Saryu Aarti at Ram ki Paidi is held at sunset — free, no ticket, and one of the most moving hours in Ayodhya. Mobile phones, cameras, smart watches, large bags, and leather items are not permitted inside the Janmabhoomi complex; lockers are available at the entrance.

Timings shift on festival days. When you travel with Satmarg, we reconfirm every timing before your darshan — it is part of what we promise.

Yatra season

An evening at the Saryu

Lamps on the river of Shri Ram

At sundown, the Ram Ki Paidi ghats fill with pilgrims. The pandits assemble with the great brass lamps, and the priests begin the chant — Sri Ram Jaya Ram, Jaya Jaya Ram. The aarti rises with the river's mist, and along the steps, families light small earthen diyas and float them into the Saryu.

To the west, the new mandir of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi catches the last of the light. To the east, Lakshman Qila and the old Nageshwarnath stand as they have stood for generations. The pilgrim sits at the water's edge, watches a diya drift on the current, and the long-cherished name of Ram becomes a quiet feeling in the chest.

This is the heart of the Ayodhya yatra — not only the queues at the Janmabhoomi, but the dusk by the Saryu, when the city of Shri Ram lights up for the evening.

Questions asked often

Ayodhya Yatra — Frequently Asked

How do I get darshan at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi?

Darshan and arati are booked through the official Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust portal. We file the booking for every pilgrim in your group as part of the yatra package. Carry a printed copy of the booking and a government photo ID.

Can I take my phone inside the Janmabhoomi temple?

No. Mobile phones, cameras, smart watches, large bags, and leather wallets are not permitted inside the Janmabhoomi complex. A cloakroom is available at the entrance. Plan to carry only your ID, booking printout, and minimal essentials.

When is the best time to visit Ayodhya?

October to March is the most pleasant weather window. The biggest spiritual occasions are Deep Utsav (Choti Diwali in Kartik), Ram Navami (Chaitra), and the 22 January Pran Pratishtha anniversary. November after Diwali and late January after the consecration anniversary are good for quieter darshan.

How many days does an Ayodhya yatra take?

A single-day yatra from Lucknow covers the main darshan but is rushed. Two days in Ayodhya is the recommended minimum — first day for Hanuman Garhi, Janmabhoomi, Kanak Bhawan, and the Saryu Aarti; second day for Nageshwarnath, Treta Ke Thakur, and the inner parikrama if your dates permit.

Can pind-daan be performed at the Saryu?

Yes — Ayodhya is one of the major north Indian tirthas for pind-daan and tarpan. We can arrange a qualified pandit at the Saryu ghats, with the required samagri included. Mention this at the time of enquiry so we can include the muhurat and the priest's dakshina in the itinerary.

What is the dress code at Ayodhya temples?

Modest dress is expected — full-sleeved shirts or kurtas and full-length lower garments, especially at Janmabhoomi and Hanuman Garhi. Leather items are not permitted inside the Janmabhoomi complex; remove them or leave them at the chappal stand.

How do I combine Ayodhya with Kashi or Prayagraj?

Most pilgrims do Ayodhya followed by Prayagraj followed by Varanasi — the Saket-Kashi-Prayag circuit — in 5 to 6 days. We have a dedicated package for this combination on the /tours/kashi-yatra page; mention Ayodhya at enquiry and we'll add it to the itinerary.

Is Ayodhya safe for solo pilgrims and senior citizens?

Yes. Ayodhya is well-served by hotels and the new Ram Path infrastructure. The temple complex security is robust. For senior citizens, request hotels close to the Janmabhoomi to minimise walking, and let us know of any mobility needs so we can plan accordingly.

Is there paid VIP darshan at Ram Mandir?

No. General darshan is free and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust runs no paid VIP line. The free Sugam Darshan e-pass on online.srjbtkshetra.org — released about 15 days ahead, gone within minutes — gives a time-slot lane with a shorter wait. Anyone selling a 'VIP darshan ticket' for the Janmabhoomi is not official. We book only through the Trust portal, as part of every Ayodhya package.

What are the Ram Mandir aarti timings?

Mangala Aarti at 4:00 AM, Shringar at 6:30 AM, Bhog at noon (darshan pauses roughly 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM), Sandhya at 7:00 PM, and Shayan around 9:30 PM. Mangala and Shringar require passes from the Trust portal. Timings shift on festival days — we reconfirm with the temple before your visit.

How do I reach Ayodhya from Delhi?

Fly to Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) in about 1.5 hours, or take the Vande Bharat Express from Anand Vihar — about 8 hours 20 minutes to Ayodhya. Overnight trains also run. Airport and station pickup is included in every package.

When is the Saryu Aarti and do I need a ticket?

Every evening at sunset at Ram ki Paidi — free, no ticket needed. Arrive 30–45 minutes early for a place near the priests. The exact hour moves with the sunset through the year; we time your evening so darshan at the Janmabhoomi ends comfortably before the aarti begins.
