Two great tirthas
What is the Dwarka–Somnath Yatra?
This Saurashtra yatra combines two of the most revered tirthas of Hindu tradition — Dwarka (the western dham of Adi Shankaracharya's Char Dham and Krishna's royal capital) and Somnath (the first Jyotirlinga of the twelve, on the Arabian Sea). The two are 230 km apart and are usually visited in a single 5-6 day yatra, with Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, and Porbandar (Sudama's home) as natural additions. The Saurashtra coast offers a complete western pilgrimage in one trip.

Dwarkadhish & Somnath — Timings, Aartis & the Evening Show
Two of Sanatan dharma's great western shrines stand about 230 km apart on the Saurashtra coast — Dwarka, where Krishna ruled as Dwarkadhish, and Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Darshan at both is free.
| Temple | Darshan hours | Aartis & evening |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarkadhish, Dwarka | 6:30 AM – 1:00 PM and 5:00 – 9:30 PM (closed midday) | Mangla ~6:30 AM · Shringar 10:30 AM · Sandhya 7:30 PM · Shayan 8:30 PM |
| Somnath | 6:00 AM – 9:30 PM, open through the day | Aarti at 7:00 AM, 12:00 noon and 7:00 PM |
| Somnath light & sound show | 8:00 – 9:00 PM nightly (paused in monsoon) | The temple's history of destruction and rebuilding, told at the shore |
Nearby: Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is ~17 km from Dwarka on the Okha road, and Bet Dwarka island lies beyond Okha — now reached by road over the 2.3 km Sudarshan Setu, so no boat is needed. At Somnath, the 7:00 PM aarti followed by the show makes the natural evening; arrive 30 minutes early for a place near the sanctum. Mobile phones and bags are not allowed inside either sanctum — lockers are available at the gates.
Timings shift on festivals. We reconfirm with both temple offices before your darshan — it is part of what we promise.

Dwarka–Somnath Yatra — Frequently Asked
How are Dwarka and Somnath connected?
They are 230 km apart by road along the Saurashtra coast — about 6-7 hours of comfortable driving with stops. Most pilgrims drive between the two cities; flights are not available directly. Diu, between the two, can be an optional beach add-on.
How many days do I need?
5 days is the recommended minimum — 2 days at Dwarka (Dwarkadhish, Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar), 1 day for the drive, 2 days at Somnath (temple, light-and-sound, beach). 7 days lets you add Porbandar (Sudama temple) and Diu.
Is the Bet Dwarka boat safe?
Yes, in normal weather. The 30-minute boat ride from the Dwarka side is operated by licensed boats with safety regulations. In monsoon (June-August) the seas can be choppy; check with us before booking.
What's the best time of year?
October to March is the most pleasant weather. Janmashtami (August-September) is the spiritual peak at Dwarka but very crowded. Shivratri (February-March) is the major festival at Somnath.
Can I add Tirupati or Char Dham later?
Yes — the Saurashtra yatra fits as part of the wider Adi Char Dham pilgrimage. Dwarka is the western dham; Puri is east; Rameshwaram is south; Badrinath is north. See /tours/adi-char-dham-yatra for the full circuit.
Is photography allowed?
Phones and cameras are not permitted inside Dwarkadhish and Somnath temple sanctums. Outer courtyards and the beach are fine for photography. Always respect pilgrims performing rituals.
Can we cover both Jyotirlingas and Bet Dwarka in one circuit?
Yes. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is ~17 km from Dwarka on the Okha road, and Bet Dwarka is now reached by road over the 2.3 km Sudarshan Setu bridge — no ferry needed. A standard morning covers Nageshwar and Bet Dwarka together before returning to Dwarka; Somnath, the first Jyotirlinga, anchors the other end of the circuit. Two of the twelve Jyotirlingas in one unhurried 3–4 day yatra.
Which aartis should we plan the days around?
In Dwarka, the Sandhya aarti at 7:30 PM at Dwarkadhish — reach by 7:00 PM. In Somnath, the 7:00 PM aarti at the Jyotirlinga, followed by the 8:00 PM light & sound show at the shore. Since the towns are five hours apart, give each its own evening — that is why the yatra needs at least three days. Mangla aarti at Dwarkadhish (~6:30 AM) rewards early risers.
What happens at Dwarka on Janmashtami — should we plan around it?
Janmashtami (August–September by the lunar calendar) is the high festival of Dwarkadhish: special darshan runs past midnight for the birth hour and the town fills days ahead. If you want the festival, book hotels and cab 1–2 months in advance and expect long queues; if you want quiet darshan, keep a week's distance from it. October–March remains the gentlest season for the full circuit.
Can we travel between Dwarka and Somnath by train or bus?
There is no convenient direct train; state buses run but take longer and skip the worthwhile halts. Most pilgrims take a cab — about 5 hours on the coastal highway — which lets you stop at Porbandar and Harsiddhi Mata on the way and keeps your timings your own. WhatsApp us your dates and we send a fixed written quote for the full circuit, cab included.
