The tradition
What is the Vaishno Devi Yatra?
The Vaishno Devi yatra is the pilgrimage to the cave shrine of Mata Rani on the Trikuta hills of Jammu. Pilgrims register at Katra, walk or take helicopter 12 km up to Bhawan where the Goddess is worshipped in her three self-manifest pindis, and then visit Bhairon Baba — tradition holds the yatra is incomplete without his darshan. The shrine is open year-round, with Navaratri (March-April and September-October) drawing the largest crowds.

The Climb to Bhawan — Registration, Route & Every Way Up
Every pilgrim — without exception — must register with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board before starting the climb. The RFID yatra card is free and mandatory: it is issued at the Yatra Registration Counter near the Katra bus stand (or online via the Shrine Board) against a photo ID, and it is scanned at checkpoints along the track. We complete this for every member of your group before travel.
From the Banganga check post in Katra, the track climbs about 13 km to Bhawan — past Charan Paduka and Ardhkuwari, the cave where tradition holds Mata meditated for nine months; many pilgrims crawl through its narrow Garbh Joon passage. The path is paved, lit, and open round the clock, with water points and refreshment stalls throughout.
| Way up | What it involves | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| On foot | ~13 km from Katra, 5–8 hrs at a pilgrim's pace | The classical yatra — most pilgrims walk at least one way |
| Pony / palki | Registered operators along the track, stage by stage or full ascent | Those who tire mid-way; palki for full assisted ascent |
| Battery car | Runs on the Adhkuwari–Bhawan stretch; book at counters or online | Elderly pilgrims who can walk the lower half |
| Helicopter | Katra to Sanjichhat, ~2.5 km short of Bhawan; book only on the official Shrine Board site — slots sell out fast | Elders and time-pressed pilgrims |
At Bhawan, darshan is of the three self-manifest pindis — Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, Maha Saraswati — inside the holy cave. Phones, cameras and leather items go into the cloakroom before the cave precinct. And the yatra does not end there: tradition holds it is complete only after darshan of Bhairon Baba, on the ridge above Bhawan — a steep walk, or a few minutes by the Bhawan–Bhairon ropeway (usually 9 AM – 5 PM).
Queue and ropeway timings shift with season and crowds — we reconfirm everything before your yatra begins.

How to Reach Katra
Katra, at the foot of the Trikuta hills, is the base of the yatra — and it now has its own railway station, so you can arrive within walking distance of the Yatra Registration Counter. Every Satmarg package includes pickup from Katra station or Jammu.
| From | By train | By air |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Vande Bharat Express, New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) in ~8 hrs; overnight trains also run daily | ~1 hr flight to Jammu, then road to Katra |
| Jammu | Frequent connections, ~1–1.5 hrs | Jammu (IXJ) is the nearest airport — ~50 km, 1.5–2 hrs by taxi or bus |
| Mumbai / Kolkata / South India | Long-distance trains to SVDK or Jammu Tawi | Fly to Jammu via Delhi — usually the practical choice |
SVDK station is in Katra town itself — no onward transfer needed. From Jammu airport, the drive to Katra takes about 1.5–2 hours through the foothills. We time pickups so you rest a night in Katra and begin the climb fresh, early in the morning.

Questions asked often
Vaishno Devi Yatra — Frequently Asked
Do I need to register before the yatra?
Yes. Yatra Parchi registration with the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board is mandatory for every pilgrim. We file this for every member of your group as part of the package; carry a printed copy and a government photo ID.
Is the helicopter package safe in monsoon?
Helicopter operations are weather-dependent and can be cancelled if visibility drops at Sanjichhat. The Shrine Board re-books or refunds if a flight is grounded. Monsoon months (July-August) have more frequent weather disruptions.
How long does the trek take?
The 12-km uphill trek takes 6-8 hours at a comfortable pace. Battery cars, ponies, and palkis are available on different stages. Allow a full day for the round trip if walking both ways.
What if my parents cannot walk?
Choose the helicopter package (Katra to Sanjichhat) and a short battery-car/palki transfer to Bhawan. We can also arrange palkis for the full ascent for senior pilgrims.
Are phones allowed at the cave?
No. Mobile phones, cameras, leather wallets, and large bags are not permitted at the cave precinct. A cloakroom is available at Bhawan.
How do I avoid the long darshan queue?
Travel on weekdays in non-peak months (February, August). The Shrine Board issues Special Darshan and Atisheeghra Darshan slots through their online portal; we can guide you through the available options at the time of booking.
Do you arrange Navaratri packages?
Yes — Navaratri Vaishno Devi packages are our highest-demand product. Book at least 2 months in advance, as both Katra hotels and helicopter slots fill quickly.
How do I book the helicopter tickets?
Only through the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website — the Shrine Board is the sole authorised channel, and slots open in advance and sell out quickly, especially around Navratri and holidays. Beware of agents reselling tickets. We handle the official booking for your group as part of the package, and manage re-booking if weather grounds a flight.
Which months are best for the yatra?
March–April and September–November offer the most comfortable trekking weather. Summer is warm at Katra but pleasant on the upper track; monsoon (July–August) brings rain and more helicopter disruptions; winter is cold with occasional snow near Bhawan — beautiful, but pack warm layers. The shrine is open year-round.
How do I reach Katra from Delhi?
The Vande Bharat Express runs from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station in about 8 hours, with overnight trains as alternatives — the station is in Katra town itself. Or fly to Jammu (about an hour) and drive ~50 km to Katra, roughly 1.5–2 hours. Pickup is included in every package.
