Getting there

How Ahmedabad Pilgrims Reach the Yatra

The Char Dham does not begin in Gujarat. It begins where the plains give out — at Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun — and the first decision to make in Ahmedabad is how you arrive at the foothills with your strength still in your legs.

By air. For most families this is the sensible choice. Ahmedabad flies from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at Hansol, and the airfield nearest the start of the yatra is Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun — the Airports Authority of India's own page for it points arriving travellers straight on to Rishikesh, Haridwar, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Direct Ahmedabad–Dehradun flying has existed in recent seasons, but we do not treat it as fixed. So we check live schedules against your exact dates rather than promise you a flight that may not be running in your travel month. If nothing suits, we build the connection that does work and drive you up to Haridwar the same day.

By rail. Gujarat to Garhwal is the width of northern India. Rail is how pilgrim families have always travelled, and for many households the journey itself is part of the yatra — if that is what your elders want, say so in your first message and we plan around whichever service you book, meeting your train at the station it actually reaches. But be honest with the calendar: rail takes a serious bite out of both ends of a pilgrimage that already asks ten days or more, and those days are better spent on the mountain than on a platform.

By road. Gujarati groups do drive up, often as one extended family in a hired tempo traveller with their own priest along, and there is real pleasure in that. It is days of driving each way before the mountain roads even begin, so it suits a group travelling together with time to give — not a family fitting the yatra into a fortnight of leave.

However you come, our vehicle and driver are waiting with your name on a board. No bargaining with a taxi at an unfamiliar terminal at the end of a long journey, and no arranging your own way to the start line.

How long to block

Budgeting the Days — Including the Journey Up

Char Dham durations are almost always quoted from Haridwar or Dehradun, because that is where the yatra begins. It is not where you begin. From Ahmedabad, add a travel day at each end and plan your leave against the honest total.

How you travelOn the mountainBlock from Ahmedabad
Full road yatra — all four dhams from Haridwar, with overnight halts through Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi and Joshimath9–12 daysAbout 11–14 days
Helicopter Char Dham — shuttle flights from Dehradun, short road transfers and short walks5–6 daysAbout 7–8 days
Do Dham — Kedarnath and Badrinath only, for families who cannot give a fortnight6–7 daysAbout 8–9 days

Every itinerary we build carries a day of slack. In the Himalaya, weather shuts roads and grounds helicopters without consulting anybody's return ticket, and a plan with no give in it is a plan that breaks. If your flight home cannot be changed, tell us in the first message and we shape the route around it.

The four dhams

What You Are Actually Going to See — and In What Order

The Char Dham of Uttarakhand is a circuit, not a list. Tradition walks it west to east — Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — moving from the two river sources, through Shiva's high seat, to Vishnu's. Every Satmarg itinerary keeps that order, because the order is itself part of the meaning.

DhamThe deity and the meaningHow you reach the shrine
YamunotriSource of the Yamuna; Yamuna as Surya's daughter and Yama's sisterRoad to Janki Chatti, then a trek. Pony, palki and porters available
GangotriWhere Ganga is worshipped at her descent to earthReached by road — no trek
KedarnathShiva as Kedarnath — one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the highest of themA long uphill trek from Gaurikund, or helicopter. Pony and palki available
BadrinathVishnu as Badri Vishal; Tapt Kund before darshanReached by road — no trek

Kedarnath and Badrinath are administered by the Shri Badarinath Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), the statutory committee that also looks after forty-five other temples in Uttarakhand. Puja bookings at both shrines run through the committee's own system, and prior registration is required for them — we arrange those bookings for you, in your gotra and sankalp, with no middleman in between.

One thing worth settling before you plan. In Gujarat, "Char Dham" often means the pan-India Adi Char Dham — Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram and Dwarka — and Dwarka is your own state's dham, so many families have already stood there. That is a different pilgrimage from this one. The yatra on this page is the Himalayan Char Dham of Uttarakhand: four shrines in one Garhwal circuit, in one season. If it is the four-corner yatra you had in mind, our Adi Char Dham plan is the right page, and we will send that instead — just say so.

Before you go

Registration, Season & the Altitude Nobody Warns You About

Registration is mandatory, and it is free. In the Government of Uttarakhand's own words, it is necessary to register yourself and your vehicles before you start your journey to Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib — and the state describes the process as a free exercise. The one official portal is registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. You register, choose your dates and dhams, and download a Yatra Registration Letter carrying a QR code, which you carry with you and which is checked at each shrine. Anyone charging you a fee for that registration is charging you for nothing. We complete it for every pilgrim in your booking and hand you the letter before you leave.

The season moves every year. The kapat of the dhams open in spring and close for winter in the weeks around Diwali — but the exact dates are declared afresh each year, only weeks before the season opens, so no honest page can print them a season in advance. In practice the yatra runs from roughly late April or early May into October or November. We confirm the year's declared dates before anything is booked, and if you are planning for a future season we hold the shape of the trip and finalise it the moment the dates are announced.

Diwali is the trap for Gujarati families. The long Diwali vacation is when most of Ahmedabad travels — and it falls at exactly the point where the dhams are shutting for the winter. For the Char Dham, the two windows that actually work are the May–June school break and the settled post-monsoon weeks from mid-September into October. Avoid July and August altogether: the Garhwal monsoon brings landslides and closures on the very highways the yatra needs.

Altitude is the real difficulty, not the distance. Ahmedabad sits low, flat and warm; the dhams sit high and cold, and the air at Kedarnath and Badrinath is thinner than anything Gujarat prepares a body for. Even in summer the temperature drops hard once the sun goes. The way to travel is slowly — a night's halt lower down before the Kedarnath climb, water through the day, no rushing the last stretch — and we build the itinerary that way instead of compressing it to save a hotel night.

Who should think again about the trek. The Kedarnath walk from Gaurikund is a long uphill climb — several hours each way on a mountain path, at height. Please reconsider it — and speak to your doctor first — if anyone in the group has a cardiac or respiratory condition, uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes, has had recent surgery, is in later pregnancy, or simply does not walk long distances at home. There is no shame in any of this. Pony, palki and porter services operate on the route; helicopter shuttles fly to Kedarnath and are booked only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal at heliyatra.irctc.co.in; and the shorter Do Dham yatra exists precisely for families who want the darshan without the fortnight. Tell us the oldest traveller's age in your first message and the plan is built around them from the start.

Full Itineraries, Route Legs & Every Package

The day-by-day route from Haridwar, the driving legs between the dhams, helicopter versus road, and every Char Dham package we run all live on our main Char Dham Yatra hub. If a fortnight is more than your family can give, the Do Dham Yatra covers Kedarnath and Badrinath in a shorter window.

Mountain schedules are not promises made in advance — they are decisions taken each morning against the weather. What we commit to is the plan, the bookings, the registration, the food, and a person on the phone when the mountain changes its mind.

Questions asked often

Questions Ahmedabad pilgrims ask us

Is there a direct flight from Ahmedabad to Dehradun?

A direct Ahmedabad–Dehradun service has been flown in recent seasons, but we will not promise you a flight that may not be running on your dates. Send us your dates and we check live schedules before quoting — direct if it exists on those days, a connection north and a same-day drive up to Haridwar if it does not. Either way the pickup at Jolly Grant or at the connecting airport is planned around whatever you actually book.

How many days of leave should I take from Ahmedabad?

For the full road yatra to all four dhams, block about 11 to 14 days — 9 to 12 on the mountain plus a travel day at each end. The helicopter circuit brings the total down to roughly 7 to 8 days, and the Do Dham yatra to about 8 or 9. Always keep one day of slack in hand: Himalayan weather does not consult return tickets.

Is registration really mandatory, and will you do it for us?

Yes on both counts. The Government of Uttarakhand requires you to register yourself and your vehicle before starting the yatra, and it is free on the official portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in — you receive a registration letter with a QR code that is checked at each shrine. We file it for everyone in your booking as part of the package and hand you the letters before departure. If anyone asks you to pay a fee for the registration itself, they are charging you for something the state gives away.

Can we go during the Diwali vacation?

Usually not, and this is the single most common misunderstanding we correct for Gujarati families. The dhams close for winter in the weeks around Diwali, with the exact dates declared afresh each year, so the Diwali holidays sit right at the edge of the season or past it. Plan the Char Dham for the May–June break or for mid-September into October instead. If Diwali is the only window your family has, tell us — we will check the declared closing dates for that year before you book anything, and if the timing does not work we will say so rather than sell you a trip that ends at a locked door.

Will we get satvik food on the route? We need Jain meals.

Yes, and it is arranged at booking rather than argued about at the table. The food along the Char Dham route is simple and vegetarian by custom, which is the easy part. Jain requirements — no onion, no garlic, no root vegetables, meals finished before sunset — need to be told to the kitchens in advance, and that is what we do: your requirement goes into the hotel and dhaba bookings on every night halt, and we carry a plan for the high stretches where choice is thin. State it in your first message so it is built in from the start.

My parents are in their seventies. Can they do the Char Dham?

Often yes, but not by walking up to Kedarnath. Three sensible routes exist: the helicopter circuit, which removes the long treks entirely; the road yatra with pony, palki or porter support on the Yamunotri and Kedarnath stretches; or the shorter Do Dham. Please have them seen by their doctor first, particularly for heart, breathing, blood pressure or diabetes conditions — the altitude at Kedarnath and Badrinath is real, and Gujarat gives no preparation for it. Tell us their ages in the first message and the pace, the halts and the rest days are planned around them.

What does a Char Dham package from Ahmedabad cost?

The figure moves with your travel month, group size, hotel category, and whether you fly the helicopter circuit or drive it — so we do not publish a number that would be wrong for half the season. Send your month and group size on WhatsApp and we reply with a fixed written quote, itemised, with the Ahmedabad travel days included. Nothing gets added later on the mountain.
