The tradition

What is the Tirupati Balaji Yatra?

Tirumala — the seat of Bhagavan Venkateswara, also called Shri Balaji and Govinda — is the most visited shrine on earth. Tradition holds Tirumala to be the abode of Vishnu in his form as the protector of the Kaliyuga; Adi Shankaracharya is said to have established the Sahasranama of Venkateswara here. The yatra centres on the Tirumala temple at the top of the Seven Hills (Saptagiri), with Padmavathi Devi at Tiruchanur 5 km from Tirupati town. Most pilgrims spend 1-2 days at the shrine, with TTD slot-based darshan handled through the online portal.

Tirumala Darshan — Types, Booking & Temple Customs

Darshan of Bhagavan Venkateswara at Tirumala is organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). Book only through the official TTD portal — tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in — never through third-party sellers; TTD does not authorise resale of darshan tickets.

DarshanCostHow it works
Sarva DarshanFreeThe open queue — no ticket needed. Waits vary from a few hours to much longer on peak days
Special Entry Darshan (Seeghra)₹300Online only on the official TTD portal; monthly quotas open in advance and fill within hours. Includes laddu prasadam
Divya DarshanFreeFor pilgrims who climb on foot via Alipiri or Srivari Mettu — a token issued on the footpath gives a dedicated queue
Arjita SevasPer sevaSuprabhatam, Tomala, Archana, Kalyanotsavam and others — limited quotas via the TTD portal, often by electronic lucky dip

Dress traditionally: dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, saree or salwar-kameez with dupatta for women — enforced strictly for Special Entry darshan. Phones, cameras and electronic items are not allowed inside; free lockers are available. The famous Tirupati laddu, made in the temple's own potu (kitchen), is collected at the TTD counters after darshan.

Many pilgrims offer their hair at the Kalyanakatta — the tonsure halls run by TTD — as an act of surrender before darshan; it is a cherished tradition, never a requirement. And by long custom the yatra is completed with darshan of Goddess Padmavathi at Tiruchanur, about 5 km from Tirupati town.

Quota release dates and queue timings shift month to month — we reconfirm with the TTD calendar before your yatra.

Questions asked often

Tirupati Balaji Yatra — Frequently Asked

How do I get TTD darshan?

Through the TTD online portal (tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in). Sarva Darshan slots are free; Special Entry Darshan is ₹300; Arjita Sevas have specific quotas and dakshina. We file the booking for every pilgrim in your group.

How long is the darshan queue?

Highly variable. On non-festival weekdays with Special Entry Darshan slots, the wait can be 2-3 hours. On weekends, festivals, and Navaratri, queues can exceed 12 hours. Plan accordingly.

Why is tonsuring (mottai) done?

Many pilgrims offer their hair to Bhagavan Venkateswara — a tradition of complete surrender. Separate Kalyana Katta facility exists at Tirumala; not mandatory for darshan.

Are there phones/cameras allowed?

Mobile phones, cameras, and leather items are not permitted inside the Tirumala temple. Cloakroom available at the entrance.

When is the best time to visit?

September-October to February-March is most pleasant. Avoid Brahmotsavam week (September-October) if you want lighter crowds; pilgrim flow peaks then. The Vaikuntha Ekadashi darshan in December-January draws extreme crowds.

Can I get laddu prasadam?

Yes — the ₹300 Special Entry Darshan ticket includes one laddu, collected at the TTD counters after darshan. Additional laddus can be bought at the TTD counters. Our packages always include the laddu.

Should I add Sri Kalahasti or Sri Sailam?

Yes if time permits. Sri Kalahasti (Vayu lingam — one of the Pancha Bhuta lingas, 36 km from Tirupati) is highly recommended. Sri Sailam (Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, 300 km away) adds 2 days.

How does the ₹300 Special Entry booking actually work?

TTD releases Special Entry Darshan quotas for a full month at a time on the official portal (tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in), usually in the last week of the month before. Slots for weekends and festival dates fill within hours of release. You need each pilgrim's ID details at booking. We track the release calendar and file the booking for your group the day the quota opens. Book only on the official portal — never through resellers.

Should I walk up or take the bus to Tirumala?

Walking the Alipiri footpath — about 9 km and 3,550 steps, roughly 3–4 hours — is itself a cherished act of devotion, and walkers get the free Divya Darshan token for a dedicated queue. The Srivari Mettu route is shorter (2,388 steps) but steeper. If the climb is not practical, the 22 km ghat road takes under an hour, with round-the-clock buses. Many families split up — walkers climb while elders ride, and everyone meets at Tirumala.

Is there a dress code at Tirumala?

Yes. Traditional wear is expected — dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, saree or salwar-kameez with dupatta for women — and it is enforced strictly for Special Entry darshan and sevas. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops and western casuals for the temple. Footwear is removed well before the queue complex.

How many days does the Tirupati yatra need?

Two days is the comfortable rhythm: Padmavathi Devi at Tiruchanur and rest on day one, Tirumala darshan on day two. A single hurried day is possible with an early Special Entry slot. Add a third day for Sri Kalahasti or the sacred waterfalls on the hill. During Brahmotsavam and Vaikuntha Ekadashi, plan extra buffer — queues stretch far beyond normal.
