Day 1 begins at the Delhi platform. You board the overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express (12448) from Hazrat Nizamuddin the previous evening, around 8 PM, and it reaches Chitrakutdham Karwi around 6 AM on Day 1. Class and berths are confirmed at booking based on your dates. Our Hindi-speaking driver and AC sedan are at the station to receive you; the drive to Ram Ghat is about 10 km, 20-25 minutes. We check in at the 3-star hotel within walking distance of Ram Ghat, rest a short while, and take a light vegetarian thali at the hotel or a Mandakini-side place. Afternoon we walk down to Ram Ghat on the Mandakini, then to Sphatik Shila on the riverbank — the rock where Shri Ram and Sita Mata are said to have rested during the vanvas, with the footprint marks the local pandits still point out. From there a short hop to Janaki Kund, the bathing pool of Sita Mata, set among trees on the river's edge. Late afternoon return to the hotel, and we walk back down to Ram Ghat by 5:45 PM for the sandhya aarti on the Mandakini — about 30 minutes of arti and bhajan as the sun sets, lamps floated on the still river. Dinner at the dharamshala bhojnalaya or a sattvik thali place near the ghat. Early to bed; tomorrow we begin at 5:30 AM for the parikrama.
Note Train: the overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express (12448) departs Hazrat Nizamuddin around 8 PM the previous evening (Day 0) and reaches Chitrakutdham Karwi around 6 AM Day 1. Chitrakutdham Karwi is the station this yatra uses — about 10 km, 20-25 minutes from Ram Ghat. Manikpur, some 35 km out, comes in only as a fallback on dates when the 12448 is unavailable and we route you via a Prayagraj train instead. We confirm the train and class at booking. Carry comfortable walking shoes for the ghats and a light shawl for the evening aarti. Sphatik Shila bank can be slippery in the monsoon. Ram Ghat aarti timing 6:00-6:30 PM in winter, 6:30-7:00 PM in summer — our coordinator confirms the day's timing. Lunch and dinner not included; sattvik thali places near Ram Ghat charge Rs 150-300 per meal.
The heart of the yatra. We meet in the hotel lobby at 5:30 AM and drive 10 minutes to the Kamadgiri parikrama trailhead at Mukharvind Mandir. Our Hindi-speaking pandit ji is there by 5:50 AM for the sankalpa and the moli — the red thread tied at the wrist that marks the beginning of the parikrama. We begin the 5-km circuit on foot at around 6:00 AM. The path is fully paved, level for the most part, and runs around the foot of the Kamadgiri hill — a hill that Shri Ram is said to have called the form of all his deities. Along the way there are small shrines — Bharat Milap on the circuit, Lakshman Mandir, Hanuman ji, the Sita rasoi — and milk-and-water vendors at the resting spots. A comfortable pace finishes the parikrama in 75-90 minutes. We are back at Mukharvind by around 7:30 AM, return to the hotel, breakfast, and rest till mid-morning. Afternoon we visit the main Bharat Milap Mandir, on the spot in the forest where Bharat ji is said to have caught up with Shri Ram, fallen at his feet, and asked him to return to Ayodhya. The temple commemorates the meeting, the embrace of the brothers, and Shri Ram's refusal — that he would complete his fourteen years first. The murti is small, the temple is unhurried, the bhava is family-feeling. Evening we drive 5 km to Hanuman Dhara — a hillside shrine reached by about 360 steps cut into the rock. At the top is the natural spring that falls continuously on Hanuman ji's murti, said to have been opened by Shri Ram to cool Hanuman ji after the burning of Lanka. The climb takes 20-30 minutes at an unhurried pace; pony and palki are available at the base for elders who prefer not to climb. From the top there is a clear view back over Chitrakoot. We descend by sunset and return to the hotel for dinner.
Note Kamadgiri parikrama is done barefoot on the paved circuit. Carry a small water bottle; the path has shaded resting spots every 1 km. The pandit ji ties the moli at the start and recites the sankalpa in Hindi. Hanuman Dhara has about 360 steps — manageable at a slow pace; pony Rs 200-300, palki Rs 300-400, paid directly. Modest dress at all three sites. Lunch and dinner on Day 2 not included — sattvik thali places near the hotel and at the base of Hanuman Dhara charge Rs 150-250 per meal.
An early breakfast at the hotel, then we drive 18 km out to Gupt Godavari — a cave shrine cut into a hillside, two caves one behind the other. The first cave is a low-ceilinged chamber, the ceiling sloping so you have to bend at points, with a rock platform at the inner end that is held to be the seat where Shri Ram and Lakshman ji held their forest court during the vanvas. The second cave is a narrower passage, and through it runs the knee-deep Gupt Godavari stream — the Godavari that pilgrims hold to be flowing underground here, far from her open course in the Deccan. You wade through barefoot for about 100 metres; the water is cold, the rock is slippery in places, the cave is dark with a few oil lamps. At the far end the stream pools into a small kund where you can take a sankalp-snan or just a handful of jal for tarpan. We return to the hotel by around 11:30 AM, check out by 1:00 PM, and because the return train leaves in the evening the afternoon stays unhurried — a last darshan at Ram Ghat, a slow thali — before the driver takes us to Chitrakutdham Karwi station for the UP Sampark Kranti back to Delhi, which reaches Nizamuddin early the next morning. The yatra ends as it began, at the Delhi platform.
Note Gupt Godavari: barefoot inside both caves; the second cave with the stream is closed during heavy monsoon when the water rises above the waist. Carry a small towel and a change of dry foot-cover. Modest dress; phones permitted but the inner cave is dark and slippery — best to put them away. Return train: the UP Sampark Kranti departs Chitrakutdham Karwi in the evening and reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin early on the morning of Day 4. Confirm your onward plans accordingly. Lunch on Day 3 not included.
The story
About this package
Chitrakoot, the forest of the vanvas, reached from Delhi by an overnight train. Three days, two nights into the dharma-bhoomi where Shri Ram, Sita Mata, and Lakshman ji spent eleven and a half years of their fourteen-year exile — the Mandakini river, the Kamadgiri hill that Shri Ram is said to have called the form of all his deities, the spot where Bharat ji caught up with his brother and asked him to return to Ayodhya.
Chitrakoot is one of those tirthas that gets skipped in the big Delhi-Ayodhya rush. Most operators send you to Ayodhya for the Ramayana circuit and call it done. We have always thought Chitrakoot is the deeper visit — smaller crowds, an older quiet, and the Kamadgiri parikrama which is one of the few short parikramas in north India that an elder family member can walk at a steady pace. The access by train to Chitrakutdham Karwi station is comfortable now — the overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express (12448) from Delhi, then a 20-25 minute sedan ride into Chitrakoot.
What this package is
- Three days, two nights. Delhi platform on Day 0 evening, arrival Day 1 morning at Chitrakutdham Karwi, Chitrakoot stay for two nights, Day 3 evening return train to Delhi. One leave day on the calendar; the train does the long miles overnight.
- Train ex-Delhi to Chitrakutdham Karwi, sedan after. The overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express (12448) ex-Hazrat Nizamuddin, out around 8 PM and into Chitrakutdham Karwi around 6 AM — we book the berth on confirmation; on dates when it is sold out we route you by train to Prayagraj and cover the last stretch by road. From Chitrakutdham Karwi station it is about 10 km, a 20-25 minute drive to Chitrakoot in an AC sedan; the Hindi-speaking driver stays with you for all three days.
- Stay on the Mandakini. A clean 3-star hotel within walking distance of Ram Ghat — chosen so the evening sandhya aarti is an unhurried walk and the morning parikrama start is a 10-minute drive away.
- Kamadgiri 5-km parikrama on Day 2 morning. The full barefoot parikrama on the paved circuit, started in the cool morning at Mukharvind Mandir. A Hindi-speaking pandit ji is arranged at the start for the sankalpa and the moli — the red thread tied at the wrist that marks the beginning.
- Bharat Milap Mandir and Hanuman Dhara on Day 2. The hill spot where Bharat ji is said to have met Shri Ram in the forest, and the hillside shrine where the natural spring falls on Hanuman ji's murti — the spring Shri Ram is said to have opened to cool him after the burning of Lanka.
- Gupt Godavari on Day 3. The cave shrine 18 km from Chitrakoot, where two narrow caves with a knee-deep stream are held to be the Godavari flowing underground — the cave Shri Ram and Lakshman ji used to hold court during the vanvas.
- From Rs 8,400 per person on twin-share, ex-Delhi. Quoted on enquiry; final price depends on dates, train class (3AC vs sleeper on the 12448), and group size.
- Hindi-first operations. Driver, hotel staff at Chitrakoot, and the parikrama pandit ji all speak Hindi as their first language.
How the three days unfold
Day 1 starts at Hazrat Nizamuddin station — the overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express (12448) you board on Day 0 night around 8 PM, which reaches Chitrakutdham Karwi around 6 AM on Day 1. Our driver and AC sedan are at the station to receive you; Ram Ghat is about 10 km away, a 20-25 minute drive. We check in at the hotel near Ram Ghat, rest, take a light vegetarian thali. Afternoon we visit Ram Ghat on the Mandakini, Sphatik Shila (the rock where Shri Ram and Sita Mata are said to have sat, the footprints still pointed out by the local pandits), and Janaki Kund where Sita Mata is held to have bathed. Evening we walk to Ram Ghat for the sandhya aarti on the river — smaller and more intimate than the city ghats, lamps reflecting off the still water.
Day 2 begins at 5:30 AM. We drive 10 minutes to the Kamadgiri parikrama trailhead at Mukharvind Mandir, meet the pandit ji for the sankalpa and moli, and begin the 5-km circuit on foot at around 6 AM. The path is fully paved, level for the most part, runs around the foot of the hill — small shrines at intervals (Bharat Milap on the circuit, Lakshman Mandir, Hanuman ji, the Sita rasoi), milk-and-water vendors at the resting spots. A comfortable pace finishes in 75-90 minutes. We return to the hotel, breakfast, rest. Afternoon we visit the main Bharat Milap Mandir, then drive 5 km to Hanuman Dhara — about 360 steps cut into the rock to reach the hillside shrine where the natural spring falls on Hanuman ji's murti. Pony and palki are available at the base for elders who prefer not to climb. We return for dinner near the hotel.
Day 3 is Gupt Godavari morning. We drive 18 km out to the cave shrine — two caves cut into a hillside, the first a low-ceilinged chamber with a rock platform held to be where Shri Ram and Lakshman ji held court, the second a narrower passage with the knee-deep Godavari stream that pilgrims wade through barefoot. We are back at the hotel by lunch, check out by 1 PM, and the driver takes us to Chitrakutdham Karwi station for the evening UP Sampark Kranti back to Delhi, which reaches Nizamuddin early the next morning.
Who this is for
Book this if:
- You live in Delhi or the NCR and want a Ramayana-circuit yatra over a long weekend without flying or doing the road drive
- You have done Ayodhya and want to visit the forest years of the vanvas next
- You are travelling with family — including older parents who can walk a 5-km flat parikrama but not a long trek
- Your per-person budget is in the Rs 8,000-12,000 range for a Delhi-train-and-sedan format
- Hindi is your first language and you would rather the operations run in it
When to go
Chitrakoot is a year-round yatra but the windows differ. October to February is the cool weather — the parikrama in the early morning is comfortable, the evenings at Ram Ghat are pleasant. March to mid-April is warm but tolerable, and lines up with Ramnavami (late March / early April) when Chitrakoot fills up — book 4 weeks ahead. July to September is monsoon — the Mandakini runs full and Kamadgiri turns green, but the paved circuit can be slippery in places and Gupt Godavari's inner cave gets waist-deep some days; we still run the yatra. May and June are the hottest months — we shift the parikrama to 5 AM to finish before the heat.

Before you book
Questions pilgrims ask
What is included in this package, and what is not?
It covers your overnight 3AC train tickets from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Chitrakutdham Karwi and back, AC sedan transfers from the station for all three days, two nights' twin-share stay at a 3-star hotel near Ram Ghat, daily breakfast, a Hindi pandit for the parikrama sankalpa and moli, and coordinator support at the Day 1 aarti. Lunch and dinner every day, shrine donations, pony or palki hire and your travel to Hazrat Nizamuddin station are not included.
How long is the train journey, and what class is it?
You travel by the overnight UP Sampark Kranti Express in 3AC, departing Delhi around 8 PM and arriving at Chitrakutdham Karwi by about 6 AM the next day, then reverse the same route for the return on Day 3 evening. This saves a hotel night on both ends of the trip. Book early, since 3AC seats on this route sell out ahead of festivals.
Is the Kamadgiri parikrama really walked barefoot, and how demanding is it?
Yes, the roughly 5-km paved circuit is customarily walked barefoot as a mark of devotion, starting early at 5:30 AM and taking about 75-90 minutes at an easy pace with a Hindi pandit for the sankalpa and moli thread. The surface is a maintained path rather than rough terrain, but it is a real walk, not a token stop. Thin footwear is acceptable if barefoot walking isn't possible for you.
What is Bharat Milap Mandir, and when do we visit it?
Bharat Milap Mandir marks the site associated with the meeting between Bharat and Ram during the exile, and we visit it on Day 2 afternoon, after the morning's Kamadgiri parikrama and a breakfast rest. It's a shorter, quieter stop compared with the parikrama or Hanuman Dhara. Evening on Day 2 continues to Hanuman Dhara.
How many steps does Hanuman Dhara involve, and is help available for those who can't climb?
It's a genuine climb of several hundred stone steps up the hillside, with local counts commonly cited around 360, though treat any exact number as approximate. Pony or palki hire is available at the base for roughly ₹200-400, paid directly to the operator, for anyone who'd rather not climb. Most healthy adults manage the climb in 20-30 minutes with short pauses.
What is Gupt Godavari, and does it involve getting wet?
Gupt Godavari is a cave temple about 18 km from the main town, with two rock formations and a narrow stream inside one cave that pilgrims wade through, typically knee-deep, to reach the inner shrine; it's revered as the site of secret meetings between Ram and Lakshman. We visit it on Day 3 morning, so wear clothes and footwear you don't mind getting wet, and carry a change if you prefer.
When is the best time for this trip, and when should we avoid it?
October to March offers the most comfortable weather for the barefoot parikrama and the hill climbs. The monsoon can make the paved circuit slippery and raises the Mandakini's water level, while Deepawali, Ramnavami and the Amavasya Mela bring Chitrakoot's biggest crowds. If a calmer visit matters more to you than a festival atmosphere, pick an ordinary week outside these dates.
What meals and expenses should I budget for separately?
Lunch and dinner every day are not included; sattvik thali places near Ram Ghat typically charge ₹150-300 per meal. Shrine donations at the parikrama, Hanuman Dhara and Gupt Godavari, personal expenses, pony or palki hire, and your travel to Hazrat Nizamuddin station on Day 1 are also separate. Breakfast is covered both mornings.
