Pickup from your Prayagraj address by 8:00 AM. The drive south to Chitrakoot is about 130 km, roughly three hours on the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot road with one chai stop along the way. We reach Chitrakoot by around 11:30 AM, check in at the hotel or dharamshala near Ram Ghat, and break for a vegetarian thali (sattvik, no onion-no garlic if you prefer). Afternoon we visit Sphatik Shila on the bank of the Mandakini — the rock where Shri Ram and Sita Mata are said to have rested during the vanvas, with the footprint marks pointed out by the local pandits. We continue to Bharat Milap Mandir, where Bharat ji is said to have met Shri Ram in the forest to ask him to return to Ayodhya. Late afternoon we return to the hotel, rest for an hour, and walk to Ram Ghat by around 6:00 PM for the sandhya aarti on the Mandakini — about 30 minutes of arti and bhajan with diyas floated on the river. Dinner at the dharamshala bhojnalaya or a nearby sattvik thali place, early to bed — tomorrow we begin at 5:30 AM for the parikrama.
Note Prayagraj pickup window 7:30-8:30 AM (we confirm at booking). Carry comfortable walking shoes for the ghats and a light shawl for the evening aarti. Sphatik Shila is reached by a short walk from the road; the bank can be slippery in the monsoon. Ram Ghat aarti timing 6:00-6:30 PM in winter, 6:30-7:00 PM in summer — our coordinator confirms the day's timing. Hotel and dharamshala staff at Chitrakoot speak Hindi as their first language. Dinner not included; we recommend the Mandakini-side thali places at Rs 150-250 per meal.
The early start. We meet in the hotel lobby at 5:30 AM and drive 10 minutes to the Kamadgiri parikrama trailhead at Mukharvind Mandir. Our Hindi-speaking pandit ji is there by 5:50 AM for the sankalpa and the moli — the red thread tied at the wrist that marks the beginning of the parikrama. We begin the 5-km circuit on foot at around 6:00 AM. The path is fully paved, level for the most part, and runs around the foot of the Kamadgiri hill — a hill that Shri Ram is said to have called the form of all his deities. Along the way there are small shrines — Bharat Milap, Lakshman Mandir, Hanuman ji, the Sita rasoi — and milk-and-water vendors at the resting spots. A comfortable pace finishes the parikrama in 75-90 minutes. We are back at Mukharvind by around 7:30 AM, return to the hotel, breakfast, and check out by 10:00 AM. Afternoon we drive 5 km to Hanuman Dhara — a hillside shrine reached by about 360 steps cut into the rock. At the top is the natural spring that falls continuously on Hanuman ji's murti, said to have been opened by Shri Ram to cool Hanuman ji after the burning of Lanka. The climb takes 20-30 minutes at an unhurried pace; pony and palki are available at the base for elders who prefer not to climb. From the top there is a clear view back over Chitrakoot. We descend by 1:30 PM, lunch at a thali place at the base, and start the drive back to Prayagraj by 2:00 PM. We drop at your Prayagraj address by 5:30-6:00 PM.
Note Kamadgiri parikrama is done barefoot on the paved circuit. Carry a small water bottle; the path has shaded resting spots every 1 km. The pandit ji ties the moli at the start and recites the sankalpa in Hindi. Hanuman Dhara has 360 steps — manageable at a slow pace; pony Rs 200-300, palki Rs 300-400, paid directly. Modest dress at both sites. Return drop window 5:30-6:30 PM at your Prayagraj address. Lunch on Day 2 not included — we recommend the thali places at the base of Hanuman Dhara at Rs 150-250 per meal.
The story
About this package
Chitrakoot, the forest the Ramayana walks through. A two-day, one-night yatra from Prayagraj into the dharma-bhoomi where Shri Ram, Sita Mata, and Lakshman ji spent eleven and a half years of their vanvas — quiet hills, the Mandakini river, and a circuit of small shrines that are still the way Tulsidas would have known them.
Chitrakoot is a three-hour drive from Prayagraj on a road that most yatris don't think of first. Most operators send you to Ayodhya for the Ramayana circuit; we've always thought Chitrakoot is the deeper visit — smaller crowds, an older atmosphere, and the Kamadgiri parikrama which is one of the few short parikramas in north India that can be done by an elder family member at a steady walking pace.
What this package is
- Two days, one night. Prayagraj pickup early morning Day 1, Prayagraj drop evening Day 2 — a single weekend, no leave required.
- Sedan ex-Prayagraj. AC sedan for 2-3 travellers, Innova on request for 4-6. Hindi-speaking driver who knows the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot road and where to park at Ram Ghat and the Kamadgiri trailhead.
- Stay on the Mandakini. A clean 3-star hotel or a well-kept dharamshala within walking distance of Ram Ghat — chosen so the evening aarti and the morning parikrama are both an unhurried walk away.
- Kamadgiri 5-km parikrama on Day 2. The full barefoot parikrama on the paved circuit, done in the cool morning. A Hindi-speaking pandit ji can be arranged at the start for the sankalpa and the moli (the red thread tied at the beginning).
- Ram Ghat sandhya aarti on Day 1. Evening aarti on the Mandakini at Ram Ghat — smaller and more intimate than Varanasi, with the lamps reflecting off the still river.
- From Rs 3,800 per person on twin-share. Quoted on enquiry — final price depends on dates, group size, and stay category. A floor price for the Chitrakoot circuit from Prayagraj.
- Hindi-first operations. Driver, hotel staff, and the parikrama pandit ji all speak Hindi as their first language.
How the two days unfold
Day 1 we pick you up from your Prayagraj address by around 8 AM and drive south to Chitrakoot — about 130 km, three hours on the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot road with one chai stop. We reach by lunch, check in at the hotel near Ram Ghat, and break for a light vegetarian thali. Afternoon we visit Sphatik Shila on the bank of the Mandakini — the rock where Shri Ram and Sita Mata are said to have sat, with the footprint marks still pointed out by the local pandits — and Bharat Milap Mandir, where Bharat ji is said to have met Shri Ram in the forest. Evening we walk to Ram Ghat for the sandhya aarti on the Mandakini — about 30 minutes of arti and bhajan as the sun sets.
Day 2 starts early. We reach the Kamadgiri parikrama trailhead by 6 AM, meet the pandit ji for the sankalpa and moli at Mukharvind Mandir, and begin the 5-km parikrama on foot. The circuit is fully paved, level for the most part, and takes 75-90 minutes at a comfortable pace. There are small shrines along the way — Bharat Milap, Lakshman Mandir, Hanuman ji — and milk-and-water vendors at the resting spots. We finish back at Mukharvind by around 8 AM, return to the hotel, breakfast, and check out by 10. Afternoon we drive 5 km out to Hanuman Dhara — a hillside shrine with about 360 steps cut into the rock, the natural spring that falls on Hanuman ji's murti, and a clear view back over Chitrakoot. By 2 PM we start the drive back to Prayagraj, drop at your address by 5-6 PM.
Who this is for
Book this if:
- You live in Prayagraj or are visiting and want a short Ramayana-circuit yatra over a weekend
- You have done Ayodhya and want to visit the forest years of the vanvas next
- You are travelling with family — including older parents who can walk a 5-km flat parikrama but not a long trek
- Your per-person budget is in the Rs 3,500-5,000 range and you want a clean, well-run yatra at floor price
- Hindi is your first language and you would rather the operations run in it
When to go
Chitrakoot is a year-round yatra but the windows differ. October to February is the cool weather — the parikrama in the early morning is comfortable, the evenings at Ram Ghat are pleasant. March to mid-April is warm but tolerable, and lines up with Ramnavami (late March / early April) when Chitrakoot fills up — book 3-4 weeks ahead. July to September is monsoon — the Mandakini runs full and Kamadgiri turns green, but the paved circuit can be slippery in places; we still run the yatra. May and June are the hottest months — we shift the parikrama to 5 AM to finish before the heat.

Before you book
Questions pilgrims ask
What does the price include, and what is left out?
It covers your private AC sedan from your Prayagraj address and back, one night's twin-share stay at a 3-star hotel or dharamshala near Ram Ghat, Day 2 breakfast, a Hindi pandit for the parikrama sankalpa and moli thread, and our coordinator's help at the Ram Ghat aarti. Lunch and dinner on Day 1, lunch on Day 2, temple donations and any pony or palki hire at Hanuman Dhara are extra.
How far is Chitrakoot from Prayagraj, and what is the drive like?
It's about 125-130 km each way, roughly 3 hours by sedan with one tea stop, mostly on decent highway. We pick you up at 8 AM on Day 1 and typically have you back home by 5:30-6:00 PM on Day 2. Traffic near Chitrakoot town can slow the last stretch on festival dates.
Is the Kamadgiri parikrama really done barefoot, and how long does it take?
Yes, walking the roughly 5-km paved circuit barefoot is the customary way pilgrims complete it, as a mark of respect, and it typically takes 75-90 minutes at an unhurried pace. The path is a maintained circuit, not rough ground, but it does start early, around 5:30 AM, before the day heats up. If barefoot walking isn't possible for you, simple socks or thin footwear are commonly seen and nobody will stop you.
How many steps is the climb to Hanuman Dhara, and is it manageable?
Hanuman Dhara involves a genuine climb of several hundred stone steps up the hillside to reach the spring; local counts are commonly cited around 360, though we'd treat any exact figure as approximate rather than official. Most healthy adults manage it in 20-30 minutes with a couple of pauses. Pony or palki hire is available at the base for around ₹200-400, paid directly to the operator, for anyone who can't manage the climb.
What happens at the Ram Ghat aarti, and is a boat ride included?
Ram Ghat's sandhya aarti runs for about 30 minutes of prayers and bhajans with floating diyas on the Mandakini, and our coordinator helps you find a good spot along the ghat steps. Boats are available for hire directly from boatmen at the ghat if you want a short river ride, but this is arranged and paid for on the spot, not part of the package.
Does it matter that Chitrakoot sits on the Uttar Pradesh-Madhya Pradesh border?
Chitrakoot town straddles both states, but as a pilgrim you won't notice any practical difference; Kamadgiri, Ram Ghat and Hanuman Dhara are all on the Uttar Pradesh side and you move between sites on the same roads without any checkpoint or separate permission. It only really matters if you're planning to visit sites further into Madhya Pradesh, which this package does not include.
When is the best time to visit, and when should we avoid it?
October to March gives the most comfortable weather for the parikrama and the Hanuman Dhara climb. The monsoon months can make the barefoot circuit uncomfortable underfoot and swell the Mandakini, while festivals like Deepawali, Ramnavami and the Amavasya Mela bring much heavier crowds to Ram Ghat and Kamadgiri. If you want a quieter visit, aim for an ordinary weekday outside these periods.
What meals and expenses should I plan for separately?
Lunch and dinner on Day 1 and lunch on Day 2 are not included; a simple thali near Ram Ghat typically costs ₹150-300 per person. Temple donations, personal expenses, pony or palki hire at Hanuman Dhara, and travel insurance are also separate. Day 2 breakfast is covered.
