Dev Deepawali — Festival of the Gods

On Kartik Purnima, the city lights the river. Along the six-kilometre stretch of riverfront — 84 ghats, over ten lakh earthen diyas — recent years have crossed twenty lakh — a single line of light is laid as the sun sets. The Ganga holds the reflection. Above it, the sky fills with fireworks. For two or three hours on one evening in November, Kashi belongs entirely to this scene.

This is Dev Deepawali — the gods' Diwali — celebrated only in Kashi, on the full moon of the month of Kartik, fifteen days after the Diwali most of the country knows. It is older, quieter in tone, more ceremonial. And the lakhs of diyas, on the steps and in the water, speak for themselves.

Three days, paced so the festival night is yours to take in without distraction.

The legend behind the night

The night marks Lord Shiva's victory over Tripurasura — the asura who held three aerial fortresses and could only be undone by a single arrow at a single moment. When Shiva burned the three cities, the gods are said to have descended to Kashi to celebrate with lamps. The ghats re-enact that welcome every Kartik Purnima. The diyas mark the gods' joy. The fireworks recall the arrow.

How we look after this journey for you

• The hotel is reserved early. Within a 10-minute walk of the ghats, booked the day Kartik Purnima dates are confirmed — so the festival evening is not spent in traffic.
• The boat for the lighting hour is pre-booked. A 4:30 PM launch puts you on the water about an hour before the diyas are lit, so you watch the ghats catch light from the river itself.
• Front-row seating at the special Dev Deepawali aarti — the festival edition with 21 priests in synchronised movement, instead of the usual 7.
• Days 1 and 2 cover the rest of Kashi — Vishwanath darshan, the temple sequence, the old galis, the regular aarti — so the evening of Day 3 is free, with everything else already done.

The three days, briefly

• Day 1 — 23 November. Pickup at the station or airport, hotel near the ghats, then Sarnath and the Swarved Mahamandir by AC cab. The Ganga Mahotsav on the ghats in the evening.

• Day 2 — 24 November, Kartik Purnima. Kashi Vishwanath darshan in the morning before the crowds, an unhurried afternoon at the hotel, 4:30 PM boat launch for the lighting hour and the Dev Deepawali Maha Aarti. An optional walk through the lit ghats once the main rush has eased.

When exactly is Kartik Purnima?

Dev Deepawali falls on Kartik Purnima — the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, fifteen days after Diwali.

A few things to know before you arrive

1. Book early — three months is the comfortable lead time. Dates for 2026 are November 24; bookings open in August.
2. Layer up. November nights can dip to 12–15°C, and the boat is colder than the ghat.
3. Charge everything. A power bank is useful — the evening is long, and a phone or camera will see heavy use.
4. Cash for offerings. ₹2,000 in small notes covers dakshina, small festival purchases and chai.
5. Crowds are real. Dashashwamedh draws very large numbers on the night. The plan keeps you within the ghat-and-boat zone, with your group, throughout the evening.

Frequently asked

When should I book?

Roughly three months before Kartik Purnima is comfortable. For 2026 (November 24), August is the safer window. We open confirmed inventory about four months ahead, and it tends to fill quickly.

How crowded is the festival night?

The main ghats see very large crowds on the night — well over a lakh of people across the riverfront. From the boat you are above the crowd and have your own space. From the reserved aarti seating you are within the ghat in a secured zone. Lanes away from the ghats are difficult to move through after about 4 PM, so the evening plan keeps you in the ghat-and-boat zone throughout.

Is this suitable for young children?

Children of about 6 and above usually handle it well, and for families the boat is the easier option since it stays clear of the ghat crowds. For children under 6, the late hours and crowds can be tiring; our 3-day Family package in the off-season is a gentler fit.

What happens if weather affects the boat?

It is rare in November — the monsoon is over and the river is settled. If fog or unusual high water cancels the boat, we move you to rooftop aarti viewing at a heritage hotel and refund the boat cost.

When do the fireworks happen?

They begin shortly after the aarti concludes, around 7 PM. The main burst falls between 7:15 and about 7:45, with sporadic displays continuing until close to 10. From the boat you see them reflected on the water — often a fuller view than from the steps.

What is the best position for photographs?

The boat is the most flexible vantage point — the photographer's boat upgrade adds a stable tripod deck and an open roof. The 4:30 PM launch gives you the sunset frame before the diyas are lit. The reserved aarti seat is the second-best position for the main ceremony itself.

How quickly do you reply to enquiries?

Within 6 working hours on weekdays (Mon–Sat). Dev Deepawali enquiries during the August–October window receive priority — often a reply within 2 hours.
