Kashi Vishwanath Temple
One of the most revered among the twelve Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath stands at the spiritual heart of Kashi, the Avimukta Kshetra that Shiva is believed never to leave. For countless devotees, darshan here is not only worship, but a return to one of Hinduism's deepest sacred centers.
VaranasiDashashwamedh Ghat
The spiritual centrepiece of Varanasi's ghats and one of the five sacred panchatirtha ghats of Kashi. Tradition holds that Brahma himself performed ten Ashwamedha yajnas here, and the evening Ganga Aarti continues a nightly devotional offering to the river goddess.
VaranasiNageshwar Jyotirlinga
Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is the Shiva Jyotirlinga on the Saurashtra coast near Dwarka — traditionally counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Sanatan Dharma. The temple is famed for the massive 25-metre seated Shiva murti at the entrance, and for the Shiva Purana's katha of Shiva slaying the asura Daruka to protect his devotee Supriya.
Devbhumi DwarkaGangotri
Gangotri is the sacred seat of goddess Ganga in the high Bhagirathi valley and the second dham of the traditional Chota Char Dham yatra. Tradition holds that here King Bhagiratha did tapas for many years to bring Ganga down from the heavens, and Shiva received her on his matted hair so that the earth might bear her descent.
UttarkashiManikarnika Ghat
Manikarnika is the <em>Mahashamshan</em> of Kashi — the great cremation ground. Hindu tradition holds that Shiva whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ear of every soul cremated here, and that the ground itself grants moksha. It is counted among the five <em>panchatirtha</em> ghats of Kashi.
VaranasiNageshwarnath Temple, Ayodhya
Nageshwarnath is the principal Shiva temple of Ayodhya, traditionally installed by Kush — the son of Shri Ram — after a Nag-kanya (serpent maiden), a devoted worshipper of Shiva, returned the armlet he had lost in the Saryu. Held by the Awadh tradition to be the kshetrapala (guardian-deity) of the entire Ram-bhumi.
