Bharadwaj Ashram is the Ramayana-era hermitage of Maharishi Bharadwaj at Prayagraj — where Shri Ram, Sita, and Lakshman rested during their vanvas and received guidance toward Chitrakoot. The principal Ramayana-era site preserved in Prayagraj, with continuing Vaishnava worship.

Bharadwaj Ashram sits in central Prayagraj, in the Colonelganj area near the Anand Bhavan museum. The site is the traditional location of the hermitage of Maharishi Bharadwaj — one of the seven great rishis (saptarishi) and the father of Dronacharya (the Mahabharata-era guru). The Ramayana places Bharadwaj's ashram here at Prayag, near the Triveni-Sangam; tradition holds that Shri Ram, Sita, and Lakshman visited Bharadwaj at the beginning of their vanvas, received his blessings, and were guided by him toward the Chitrakoot forest where they would spend much of their fourteen years.

The ashram complex today includes the main Ram-Sita-Lakshman shrine (built around the spot where Shri Ram is said to have rested), the Bharadwaj kuti (the recreated rishi-hut at the spot of Bharadwaj's tapas), a small Hanuman shrine, and the Bharadwajeshwar Mahadev temple (a Shiva-linga said to have been worshipped by Bharadwaj himself).

The Ramayana visit

The Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana describes the three exiles's visit. Bharadwaj welcomed Ram, Sita, and Lakshman, offered them rest, and (according to some accounts) attempted to offer them the comforts of his ashram so they might stay rather than continue into the deeper forest. Ram declined out of dharma — accepting the discomforts of vanvas was his vow — and asked the muni's guidance for a place where their tapas could be undisturbed. Bharadwaj directed them to Chitrakoot, and they departed the next morning. The Ashram preserves several spots associated with this visit.

Bharadwaj Ashram, Prayagraj, UP

Bharadwaj Ashram is held by Vaishnava tradition to be the principal Ramayana-era site preserved at Prayagraj — the place where the divine family's vanvas truly began. The site is also held in the wider Vedic tradition as the seat of Maharishi Bharadwaj himself, one of the great rishis whose lineage produced many later teachers. The Bharadwajeshwar Mahadev temple within the complex is held to be one of the oldest Shiva-lingas of Prayagraj.

Verified spiritual significance

History

The Bharadwaj Ashram has been a pilgrim site since antiquity. The present structures date from the medieval period with multiple renovations through the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. The complex is managed by the Bharadwaj Ashram Trust and was significantly expanded for the 2019 Ardh Kumbh and 2025 Mahakumbh.

Architecture

The complex spans about 2 acres and includes the Ram-Sita-Lakshman shrine, the Bharadwaj kuti, the Bharadwajeshwar Mahadev temple, a small library, and pilgrim rest-houses. The architecture is mixed — older sanctums in regional Awadhi style, newer additions in standard modern temple architecture.

Rituals & Practices

The ashram is open from 6 AM to 9 PM with morning and evening aartis at the main Ram-Sita shrine and the Mahadev temple. The traditional sequence: enter, darshan at Ram-Sita-Lakshman shrine, time at Bharadwaj kuti, abhishek at Bharadwajeshwar Mahadev, departure. Many pilgrims do the Bharadwaj Ashram as the closing site of their Prayagraj yatra — after Sangam-snan, Akshay Vat, and Lete Hanuman.
