Sanjichhat sits at 6,200 feet on the upper Vaishno Devi trek, about 9.5 km from Katra and 2.5 km below Bhawan. The name Sanjichhat is the traditional name of this high plateau on the yatra route. The site is a wide flat plateau with substantial pilgrim infrastructure: a large helipad served by the SMVDSB helicopter service from Katra, dharma-shalas operated by the Shrine Board, food courts, restrooms, and the principal altitude-acclimatisation halt for trek-pilgrims.
For walking pilgrims, Sanjichhat is the major rest-stop before the final ascent — many spend 30-60 minutes here to recover before the last 2.5 km to Bhawan. For helicopter pilgrims (operating from Katra to Sanjichhat in 8 minutes one-way), the plateau is the landing-point; from here they walk down to Bhawan (an easier downhill 2.5 km, taking 45-60 minutes). The helicopter service has democratised access to Vaishno Devi for elderly and time-pressed pilgrims.
The Shrine Board infrastructure
Sanjichhat is the operational hub of the modern Vaishno Devi yatra. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board manages the helipad, the cable-car (battery-car-equivalent service), the dharma-shalas (multiple categories for different budgets), the food court, and the medical aid centre. During Navaratri the helipad operates extended hours; during peak summer the dharma-shalas accept yatra-tickets for accommodation. Reservations can be made through the Shrine Board portal in advance.

Sanjichhat itself has no major sacred shrine; the importance is functional and practical for the Vaishno Devi yatra. However, the elevated plateau-view of the Trikuta hills, the visible cave-area of Bhawan in the distance, and the often spectacular cloud-cover from late afternoon onwards make the site spiritually atmospheric. Many pilgrims describe their Sanjichhat halt as the moment when the yatra's scale becomes physically real.
History
Sanjichhat was developed as a major yatra infrastructure node by the SMVDSB through the 1990s and 2000s. The helicopter service expanded steadily over the years; the dharma-shalas, food courts, and aid centres followed. Successive expansions brought modern restrooms, paved walkways, and signage in multiple languages.
Architecture
Sanjichhat plateau has the helipad (with multiple landing zones), Shrine Board dharma-shalas in tiered accommodation categories, food courts, medical aid centre, cable-car/battery-car terminal, public restrooms, and small commercial stalls. The architecture is functional modern construction — concrete and steel — designed for the high-volume yatra flow.
Rituals & Practices
No formal pujas at Sanjichhat; it is a halt-station. Pilgrims arriving by helicopter from Katra take a few minutes to acclimatise at the higher altitude, then walk down to Bhawan via the paved 2.5-km path. Walking pilgrims arrive from Adhkuwari (2.5 km below), rest briefly, refuel at the food court, and continue uphill to Bhawan. The Shrine Board volunteer team manages flow during peak periods.

Practical guidance to help you plan your pilgrimage
| Pilgrim Guidance | How to reachSanjichhat is reached by helicopter from Katra (8 minutes one-way, book through SMVDSB) or by trek from Katra (12 km total, of which 9.5 km to Sanjichhat). The trek path passes Banganga (2 km), Charan Paduka (3.5 km), and Adhkuwari (7 km) before reaching Sanjichhat. PreparationThe altitude is 6,200 feet — give yourself acclimatisation time, especially after helicopter arrival from Katra (~700 feet). Carry warm clothes; the plateau is much cooler than Katra. The wind picks up in late afternoon — wear a windbreaker. Helicopters do not fly in poor visibility; budget for weather-delays. Best time to visitYear-round following the Vaishno Devi yatra schedule. Helicopter operations: weather-dependent, generally good in May-June and September-November. Avoid the monsoon (July-August) for helicopter; trek is also less pleasant in monsoon. |
